20110249226 | SELF-COMPENSATING, QUASI-HOMEOTROPIC LIQUID CRYSTAL DEVICE WITH HIGH CONTRAST RATIO - Self-compensating, quasi-homeotropic liquid crystal devices overcome the contrast reducing effects of smaller pretilt angles. The devices exhibit extremely high contrast ratio but at the same time suppress fringe field-induced disclination lines in high pixel density and small pixel size quasi-homeotropic displays. The surface pretilt and cell twist angles are set at values that, in combination, contribute to establishing a cuspate singularity in the contrast ratio for normally incident light in response to a drive signal switching the liquid crystal device to the OFF director field state that provides nearly 0% optical efficiency. The OFF director field state corresponds to a subthreshold drive level that provides for the liquid crystal device self-compensation for in-plane optical retardation. Setting the cell gap (“d”) to provide substantially 100% optical efficiency in response to a value of the drive signal switching the liquid crystal device to the ON director field state achieves optimal dynamic range for the liquid crystal device. | 10-13-2011 |

20110152643 | "Band-aid"-type potassium ion (K+) biosensor - Potassium ion (K+) is important in regulating normal cell function in the human body, specifically the heartbeat and the muscle function. It is important to be able to monitor potassium ion concentrations in human fluids. This invention describes a novel concept for a potassium ion biosensor that accurately, rapidly, and efficiently monitors the presence and records the concentration of potassium ions with high specificity, not only in serum and urine, but also in the sweat or even eye fluid. This specific biosensor design utilizes a nanomanufacturing technique, i.e. electrospinning, to produce advanced nano-bio-composites that specifically trace even minute quantities of potassium ions through the use of selective bio-receptors (ionophores) attached to high surface area nanofibers. Electroactive polymers are then employed as transducers to produce an electronic (rather than ionic) output that changes instantly with the change in K+ concentration. Such biosensors may be manufactured in a skin patch configuration. | 06-23-2011 |

20120244080 | PROTEIN AGENT FOR DIABETES TREATMENT AND BETA CELL IMAGING - Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) is a member of a large family of incretin hormones secreted in nutrient-dependent response. GLP-1 acts on GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1 R) that is highly expressed on pancreatic β-cells. The peptide has great potential for development of diabetes treatment and diagnosis. However, the pharmaceutical effects of the peptide suffer from in vivo instability and short life due to degradation by Dipeptidylpeptidase-1 (DPP-4). The 30 amino acid peptide GLP-1 has been integrated into a stable host protein human calbindin D9k. The fusion protein binds to GLP-1 R as demonstrated by immunostaining analyses of GLP-1 R expressing cells. The fusion protein agents can be useful for both diabetes treatment and GLP-1 R receptor targeting MR imaging. The fusion protein has a size about 14 kDa, which enables efficient tissue penetration and retention, and an extended circulation time, is stable, remaining intact and retaining activity after 48 hours incubation with 75% human serum. The protein retains its native folded structure after boiling for ten minutes forming the basis of an experimental protocol for large scale production of the fusion protein (>30 mg/l bacterial culture). No toxicity has been observed with tests on mice. One aspect of the disclosure, therefore, provides a fusion protein comprising a first peptide characterized by selectively binding to a site of a target cell and linked to a second peptide, where the fusion protein is more stable than the first peptide alone. In embodiments of this aspect of the disclosure, the fusion protein may further comprise a detectable label attached thereto. In some embodiments of this aspect of the disclosure, the first peptide of the fusion protein may be glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1)(7-36), or glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) (9-36), or a conservative variant thereof. | 09-27-2012 |

20090291068 | Modulation of bio-electrical rhythms via a novel engineering approach - The present invention relates to novel compositions and methods to induce, and/or modulate bio-electrical rhythms (e.g. in cardiac, neuronal and pancreatic cells) by fine-tuning the activity of HCN-encoded pacemaker channels via a novel protein- and genetic-engineering approach to augment or attenuate the associated physiological responses (e.g. heart beat, neuronal firing, insulin secretion, etc) for achieving various therapeutic purposes (e.g. sick sinus syndrome, epilepsy, neuropathic pain, diabetes, etc). | 11-26-2009 |
20110008888 | Novel Genetic Approaches to Reduce or Inhibit Tumorgenicity of Human Embryonic Stem Cells and Derivatives Following Transplantation - Self-renewable embryonic stem cells (ESCs), derived from the inner cell mass of blastocysts, can propagate indefinitely in culture while maintaining their normal karyotypes and pluripotency to differentiate into all cell types. Therefore, ESCs may provide an unlimited supply of even specialized cells such as brain and heart cells for transplantation and cell-based therapies that are otherwise limited by donor availability. However, this promising application is hampered by concerns that ESCs or their multipotent derivatives also possess the potential to form malignant tumors after transplantation in vivo. The present invention provides for a novel genetic method to arrest undesirable cell division (of ESCs and other unwanted lineages) as a means to inhibit or eliminate their tumorgenic potential after transplantation. | 01-13-2011 |
