20100076173 | SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR GENERATING PEPTIDES - Antimicrobial peptides are small proteins used by the innate immune system to combat bacterial infection in multicellular eukaryotes. There is mounting evidence that these peptides are less susceptible to bacterial resistance than traditional antibiotics and that they may form the basis for a novel class of therapeutics. Systems and methods may treat the amino acid sequences of these peptides as a formal language and build a set of right-linear grammars that describe this language. These grammars may allow for rationally designed novel antimicrobial peptides in silico. These peptides conform to the syntax of natural antimicrobial peptides lack significant homology to any natural sequences, thus populating a previously unexplored region of protein sequence space. Synthesis of these peptides, leads to de novo AmPs. | 03-25-2010 |
20100184693 | METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR GENERATING AND EVALUATING PEPTIDES - A method has been developed to create databases of peptides having a desirable property, such as antimicrobial activity, based on analyzing a database of known peptides for a pattern statistically associated with an activity. One can determine a set of patterns that may be representative of a peptide having a desired characteristic or property, and evaluate a set of sequences against the set of patterns (grammars) to determine if the peptide sequence being evaluated has similar patterns to those of a peptide having the desired characteristic or property. The set of sequences being evaluated may include peptide sequences of a desired length comprising all or substantially all combinations of amino acids that conform to at least one of the set of patterns. Once the database is identified, the database may be processed in a pattern recognition procedure that identifies a set of patterns that could be understood as representative of a peptide having the characteristic of interest. A set of newly generated peptides sequences may then be processed to score these new sequences against the identified patterns to correlate the patterns to the sequences and determine a degree of association or a similarity between a respective one of the new sequences and the set of identified patterns. The method is used to provide a database of sequences that are expected to have one or more desired activities, specific sequences within the database proven to have the desired activity, and the patterns or grammars used to create the database of sequences. Although described with reference to antimicrobial peptides, a database of peptides may be identified that contains peptides that have antiviral properties, wound response properties, or some other property of interest. | 07-22-2010 |

20080207487 | MANUFACTURING PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF POLYPEPTIDES EXPRESSED IN INSECT CELL-LINES - The present invention provides a manufacturing method for polypeptides that are produced in insect cells using a baculoviral expression system. In one example, the insect cell culture is supplemented with a lipid mixture immediately prior to infection (e.g., one hour prior to infection). The polypeptides are isolated from the insect cell culture using a method that employs anion exchange or mixed-mode chromatography early in the purification process. This process step is useful to remove insect-cell derived endoglycanases and proteases and thus reduces the loss of desired polypeptide due to enzymatic degradation. In another example, mixed-mode chromatography is combined with dye-ligand affinity chromatography in a continuous-flow manner to allow for rapid processing of the insect-cell culture liquid and capture of the polypeptide. In yet another example, a polypeptide is isolated from an insect cell culture liquid using a process that combines hollow fiber filtration, mixed-mode chromatography and dye-ligand affinity in a single unit operation producing a polypeptide solution that is essentially free of endoglycanase and proteolytic activities. In a further example, the isolated polypeptides are glycopeptides having an insect specific glycosylation pattern, which are optionally conjugated to a modifying group, such as a polymer (e.g., PEG) using a glycosyltransferase and a modified nucleotide sugar. | 08-28-2008 |

20100125275 | SURGICAL DEVICE, SYSTEM AND METHOD OF USE THEREOF - The present invention includes a surgically implantable compression staple, system, and method of use thereof for the internal fixation of bone fractures, fusions, and osteotomies. The staple has a grooved construction along the outside edge of each of its legs and cannulated tabs are aligned above the grooves. The grooves and cannulated tabs of the staple are sized to fit and align with guide wires. Once holes are drilled over the guide wires with a specialized cannulated drill, the appropriately sized staple can be inserted over the guide wires and the guide wires are subsequently removed. The compression feature of the staple is activated and the staple provides stability across the desired fractured site. The system and method allows for easy alignment and precise placement of surgically implantable staples. | 05-20-2010 |

More specifically, the surgical device comprises a bridge with one or more adjustable anti-reversing portions. The adjustable anti-reversing portion(s) may be located in a symmetrical or asymmetrical manner on the bridge between the device's legs. The adjustable anti-reversing portion(s) allow for stronger compression of the bone at a known amount of compression. The adjustable anti-reversing portion(s) can also maintain the device's legs in closer proximity to one another for greater compression or maintain the device's legs apart from one another for distraction. The surgical device can also comprise cannulated or grooved legs. A system and method of use is also described. | 05-20-2010 |

20090126145 | Vacuum cleaner with sterilizing lamp - A vacuum cleaner for simultaneously cleaning and sterilizing a surface includes a vacuum cleaner housing, a plurality of wheels for supporting the vacuum cleaner housing on the surface, a main power switch for electrically connecting the vacuum cleaner to an external source of power, a motor coupled to the main power switch and a rotary brush coupled to the motor. The motor includes a suction fan. A UV lamp housing assembly is mounted inside the vacuum cleaner housing and urged downward toward the surface. The UV lamp assembly includes a UV lamp for sterilizing the surface at the same time as it is being cleaned. A UV light gasket assembly is fixedly mounted underneath the UV lamp assembly and includes a track of conductive material having a plurality of gaps and a plurality of interlock switches for closing the gaps, one interlock switch being associated with each gap. Each interlock switch includes a cap and an interlock contact of conductive material which is fixed to the cap. Each cap is movable between a depressed position where its interlock contact bridges the gap associated with the switch and a non-depressed position where its interlock contact is spaced from its associated gap. A compression spring on each cap urges the cap downward to its non-depressed position. When all of the gaps in the track are bridged by the interlock switches, the UV lamp is electrically connected to the main power source and is energized when the main power switch is turned on. The gaps are positioned on the track and the track is disposed within the vacuum cleaner housing such that tilting the vacuum cleaner in any direction relative to the surface or lifting the vacuum cleaner off of the surface will cause at least one of the caps to be moved to its non-depressed position along with its associated interlock contact, thereby disconnecting the UV lamp from the main power source. | 05-21-2009 |
