20080215157 | MODULAR FEMORAL PROVISIONAL - A provisional prosthetic system that replicates the characteristics of a corresponding, nonprovisional femoral prosthesis. The provisional prosthetic system may include a frame component and a shell component. The frame component of the provisional prosthetic system may be configured to be attached directly to a resected femur. In one exemplary embodiment, the frame component is impacted onto the resected femur to firmly seat therewith. Once the frame component is secured to the resected femur, a shell component of the provisional prosthetic system may be positioned on and secured to the frame component. In one exemplary embodiment, the frame component is made from a metallic material. This allows for the frame component to maintain the rigidity necessary to facilitate proper trialing. In another exemplary embodiment, the shell component is a plastic. | 09-04-2008 |

20090198340 | FEMORAL COMPONENT OF KNEE PROSTHESIS, THE FEMORAL COMPONENT HAVING ANTERIOR/POSTERIOR CLAW(S) FOR DIGGING INTO BONE AND/OR A RAISED RIB WITH A BULBOUS TERMINUS - One embodiment of the present invention provides a femoral component of a knee prosthesis, wherein the femoral component includes a sharp radius at each end (e.g., the anterior end and the posterior end) of the femoral component. The sharp radius at each end may form a “claw” at each end. Each of these claws may “dig” through the patient's cartilage into the bone (or may “dig” directly into bone if there is no intervening cartilage). Enhanced fixation may be achieved with the claws “digging” and fixing into the bone as well as the claws providing additional cement pressurization (e.g., with the claws in the bone, cement is less likely to escape by the anterior and posterior ends). Further, one benefit provided by a claw may be facilitating a smooth transition of cartilage/poly bearing to femoral implant/poly bearing (e.g., during knee extension). Another embodiment of the present invention provides a femoral component of a knee prosthesis, wherein the femoral component includes a raised rib having a bulbous terminus at a free edge. This raised rib having a bulbous terminus at a free edge may, for example, simultaneously create sufficient implant strength and adequate cement fixation while minimizing the component's thickness (e.g., in order to minimize the amount of bone that must be removed to fit a unicompartmental femoral component that is used for patients who have early stage arthritis). Accomplishing all three attributes (i.e. strength, cement fixation and minimal size) simultaneously has typically been difficult because these are competing objectives. | 08-06-2009 |
20100042225 | KNEE PROSTHESIS - A femoral component for a knee prosthesis comprises a reduced wear polyethylene (RWPE). Preferably all of the femoral component is the RWPE and/or at least one condylar surface of the femoral component is the RWPE. The use of RWPE instead of conventional metal components reduces or eliminates complications associated with the use of metal such as fracture (mostly at the area of the bone-metal interface), mechanical failure, and metallosis. Use of the RWPE gives a prosthesis with long life, especially with respect to wear of the femoral component. | 02-18-2010 |
