FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0002] The present invention relates generally to a fashion accessory. More specifically, the present invention relates to a customizable panel that can be attached to the strap of a backpack.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0003] It is important to enable a child to express themselves. However, traditional backpacks are mass produced and therefore limit the amount of customization and self-expression available to the child. Further, this lack of customization makes it difficult to easily identify the child.
[0004] The present invention is a backpack customization device that addresses the above-described deficiencies by providing a backpack system for personalizing the straps, particularly shoulder straps, of the backpack. The backpack system may include a cover having a body including flaps configured to be wrapped around the straps and secured via a fastener. The fastener may be hook and loop, a zipper, a drawstring, button, etc. The body may include an outer surface that may be decorated or personalized according to the user's preferences. While the invention is described as being used by children, the present may be employed by users of all ages to customize their backpacks, purses, and messenger bags.

DETAIL DESCRIPTIONS OF THE INVENTION
[0011] All illustrations of the drawings are for the purpose of describing selected versions of the present invention and are not intended to limit the scope of the present invention.
[0012] Referring to FIG. 1 through FIG. 5, the present invention, the backpack customization device is a system for customizing a backpack without modifying the backpack's original shape. Preferably, the present invention is a detachable sleeve that mat be mounted around the backpack's straps. Once mounted, a user is able to personalize the backpack by attaching personal items. These personal items enable the user to modify the backpack's appearance. Additionally, the personal items may be used to identify the user wearing the backpack. To achieve the above-described functionality, the present invention comprises a flexible panel, a first fastener 2, a second fastener 3, a mounting panel 4, and a plurality of customizing elements 5. The flexible body panel 1 is a flexible piece of material used to wrap around the backpack's strap. The first fastener 2 and the second fastener 3 are fastening elements 5 that enable the flexible body panel 1 to be attached to the backpack's straps. The first fastener 2 is mounted along a first edge 13 of the body panel 1 and the second fastener 3 is mounted along a second edge 14 of the body panel 1. Additionally, the second edge 14 is positioned opposite to the first edge 13, cross the body panel 1. Thus positioned, the first fastener 2 and the second fastener 3 enable the ends of the body panel 1 to be joined to form a sleeve around the backpack strap. Preferably, the first fastener 2 and the second fastener 3 are corresponding coupling elements 5 that may be mated together and can be selected from the group including, but not limited to, hook and loop fasteners, interlocking couplers, buttons, and magnetic clasps.
[0013] Referring to FIG. 2, FIG. 3, and FIG. 5, the mounting panel 4 is a flexible fastening device 52 that is superimposed onto a first surface 11 of the body panel 1. Additionally, the mounting panel 4 is positioned in between the first edge 13 and the second edge 14. Thus, the mounting panel 4 is positioned to facilitate displaying the personal items. The plurality of customizing elements 5 is composed of personal items that may be detachably mounted to the mounting panel 4. Preferably, the plurality of customizing elements 5 includes stickers, letters, animals, and various shapes. Expanding on this idea, each of the plurality of customizing elements 5 comprises a display device 51 and a fastening device 52. The display device 51 is an outward-facing side of the customizing element which is presented to the external world. The fastening device 52 is mounted adjacent to the display device 51 and is connected in between the display device 51 and the mounting panel 4. Thus, enabling the user to change the customizing elements 5 that are displayed on the mounting panel 4. Preferably, the user is able form names, words, and pictures using the customizing elements 5.
[0014] Referring to FIG. 2 and FIG. 3, the present invention is designed to wrap around the backpack strap. To facilitate this functionality, the present invention further comprises a plurality of creases 19. The plurality of creases 19 traverses into a second surface 12 of the body panel 1. Additionally, the second surface 12 is positioned opposite to the first surface 11 across the body panel 1. As a result, the body panel 1 may be formed into a sleeve by folding the first end toward the second end along the plurality of creases 19. Thus formed, the first fastener 2 is able to connect to the second fastener 3 to retain the body panel 1 in a sleeved configuration.
[0015] Referring to FIG. 1 and FIG. 2, the present invention is designed to provide utility features in addition to aesthetic embellishments. To that end, the present invention further comprises a document holder 6, at least one internal fastener 7, and at least one storage compartment 8. The document holder 6 is a receptacle for identification (ID) cards such as school IDs and name plates. The document holder 6 is mounted onto the first surface 11 of the body panel 1. In some embodiments, the document holder 6 is positioned in between a first lengthwise edge 15 of the body panel 1 and the mounting panel 4. Additionally, the mounting panel 4 is positioned in between a second lengthwise edge 16 of the body panel 1 and the document holder 6. Thus positioned, the documents within the document holder 6 can be clearly displayed without obstructing the view of the customizing elements 5 attached to the mounting panel 4. The second lengthwise edge 16 is positioned opposite to the first lengthwise edge 15 across the body panel 1. Additionally, the first lengthwise edge 15 and the second lengthwise edge 16 are oriented perpendicular to the first edge 13 and the second edge 14. Thereby, delineating the overall shape of the body panel 1. Preferably, a length 17 of the first lengthwise edge 15 and the second lengthwise edge 16 is less than a length 18 of the first edge 13 and the second edge 14. Preferably, the document holder 6 further comprises a pocket 61 and a flexible window 62. The flexible window 62 is integrated into the pocket 61 such that a document stored within the pocket 61 can be visually inspected by looking through the flexible window 62. The internal fastener 7 is connected to the second surface 12 of the body panel 1 so that the present invention may be retained in a desired position on the strap of the backpack. The storage compartment 8 is an additional component for housing personal items. The storage compartment 8 is mounted onto the first surface 11 and positioned offset from the mounting panel 4 along the body panel 1. Thus positioned, the storage compartment 8 enables the user to store additional personal items.
[0016] Referring to FIG. 2, embodiments of the present invention further comprise a first trim border 9 and a second trim border 10. The first trim border 9 and the second trim border 10 are flexible strips of material. The first trim border 9 is integrated into the body panel 1 along the first lengthwise edge 15. Similarly, the second trim border 10 is integrated into the body panel 1 along the second lengthwise edge 16. As a result, the first trim border 9 and the second trim border 10 reinforce the body panel 1 to prevent damage due to extended use. In some embodiments, the color of the first trim border 9 and the second trim border 10 are colored to further personalize the body panel 1. In some embodiments a location tracker is integrated into the body panel so that a parent is able to track the location of the child.
[0017] Although the invention has been explained in relation to its preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that many other possible modifications and variations can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as hereinafter claimed.
