MULTI-FUNCTIONAL BLANKET

Abstract

A multi-functional blanket may be provided for use as a lap blanket. The multi-functional blanket may include a pocket, a pouch, and apertures. The pocket may store items a seated user needs to access. The pouch may accommodate a seated users feet or the remainder of the blanket when the blanket is in a different configuration. The apertures may accommodate a seat belt providing visibility of the seat belt during use.

TECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION

[0002] The present invention relates generally to a blanket, and more specifically to a multi-functional blanket.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0003] When traveling, seated travelers are faced with cold temperatures on airplanes, car, and other methods of transportation. In response, travelers often bring blankets, jackets, dress in heavy clothing, layer clothing, etc. to maintain warmth of their body and extremities. To carry all of these items is not practical as space is limited in cars, airplanes, and other modes of travel. Carrying bulky and/or additional items may be cumbersome. Additionally, this may result in the traveler arriving improperly dressed for their final location. There is additionally difficulty in ensuring your safety belt is visible for flight attendants due to large blankets covering the safety belt. There may be discomfort and safety issues arising from blankets or jackets stuffed underneath the safety belt. When in a seat position, a traveler may hold or carry a phone or other items. These items are easily dropped and may go missing on the ground and into seat. A need exists for a travel sized blanket which is easily transported and has the ability to be moved between configurations such that the blanket is multi-functional.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0004] According to an embodiment of the invention, a blanket may include a blanket portion; a pouch; a first aperture positioned on the blanket portion; a second aperture positioned on the blanket portion; and a pocket. The pocket may be positioned relative to the first aperture such that in a first configuration of the blanket, the pocket is located on a lap of a user. In the first configuration, the first aperture is configured to receive a first seat belt portion and the second aperture is configured to receive a second seat belt portion, such that when the first seat belt portion and second seat belt portion are connected, the first seat belt portion and the second seat belt portion are visible on a top surface of the blanket.

[0005] The blanket may be configured to be moved from a first predetermined configuration to a second predetermined configuration. The first predetermined configuration is a blanket configuration and the second predetermined configuration is a pillow configuration. The first predetermined configuration is a pillow configuration and the second predetermined configuration is a muff configuration.

[0006] The blanket may include at least one closure device. The at least one closure device positioned on the pocket or the pouch for securing an opening of the pocket or the pouch. The at least one closure device located on an upper surface of the pouch, wherein the at least one closure device is configured to secure the blanket around an object. The object is a purse strap or a luggage handle.

[0007] The pocket may be a plurality of pockets arranged in a row along the width of the blanket. The blanket portion may include a length extending between a first end and a second end; and a width extending between a third end and a fourth end. The first aperture and the second aperture may be located along the length between the pocket and the first end. The pocket may be located along the length between the first aperture and the second end. The pocket may be located along the width between the first aperture and the second aperture. The blanket may be symmetric such that opposing sides of the blanket portion are mirror images of each other.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTIONS

[0020] The multi-functional blanket may include a travel sized blanket that is easily transported, is configured and sized for usage in travel environments such as airplane seats, has the ability to be moved between configurations such that the blanket is multi-functional and has multi-functional uses, and in-use has the advantages of holding valuables during use while allowing use with a seat belt. In one aspect, a traveling and/or seated person blanket may be used for the lap. Various implementations of the invention are contemplated. One implementation is a blanket with flanges. The blanket is capable of being transformed between various predetermined configurations, such as a pillow, blanket, muff, neck pillow, or seat cushion, etc. Another implementation is a blanket with the flanges omitted, where this blanket is also capable of being transformed between various configurations, such as a pillow, blanket, muff, neck pillow, or seat cushion, etc. Various configurations are contemplated depending up the environment for use and the user.

[0021] Referring to FIG. 1, a top view of a blanket 10 is shown. The blanket 10 may be a multi-functional blanket. The blanket 10 may be, for example, a cover, overlay, cloak, etc. The blanket 10 may include a pocket 12, a pouch 14, and apertures 16 and 18. The pocket 12 may be located on an upper surface 20 of the blanket 10. The pocket 12 may be located such that, in use, the pocket 12 is located on a lap of the user. The pocket 12 may be angled with respect to a side 22 of the blanket and/or a side 24 of the blanket 10. Alternatively, the pocket 12 may be aligned parallel to the side 22 and/or the side 24. The pocket 12 may have an opening 26 which may have a closure device 28. The pocket 12 may accommodate items to be stored, such as, for example, phone, tablet, electronic device, chap stick, keys, pens, pencils, and other items which may fit into the pocket 12. A user may insert the items to be stored through the opening 26 and secure them within the pocket 12 with the closure device 28. The closure device 28 may be, for example, but not limited to a button, snap, zipper, hook and loop, clasp, pin, tie, elastic, or other closing device. Although one closure device 28 is depicted, it may be appreciated that more closure devices may be provided or that closure device 28 may be omitted. Although a single pocket 12 is shown, a plurality of pockets may be provided. The plurality of pockets may be aligned and/or positioned with respect to one another and/or with respect to the sides of the blanket 10.

[0022] With continued reference to FIG. 1, the pouch 14 may be located at a distal end 30 of the blanket 10. The pouch 14 may accommodate the portion 32 of the blanket 10 extending between the distal end 30 and a proximal end 34, when in a folded configuration, as will be described to follow. In the position of FIG. 1, the pouch 14 may accommodate a user's feet. That is, in a seated position, the portion 32 of the blanket 10 may be laid on a user's lap such that the portion 32 extends downward on the legs with the pouch 14 located near the user's feet. The user may then place their feet into the pouch 14. Although depicted and described as a single user blanket, it may be appreciated that the blanket 10 may be sized to accommodate more than one user. In a multi-user scenario, the pouch 14 may be sized to accommodate the feet of all users. Alternatively, a plurality of pouches 14 may be provided to accommodate each foot of the user or multiple feet of multiple users.

[0023] The pouch 14 may include closure devices 42a, 42b. The closure devices 42a may interact with the closure devices 42b in a manner which will be described to follow. The closure devices 42a, 42b may be, for example, but not limited to a button, snap, zipper, hook and loop, clasp, pin, tie, elastic, or other closing device. Although three closure devices 42a and three closure devices 42b are depicted, it may be appreciated that more or fewer closure devices may be provided.

[0024] As shown in FIG. 1, the apertures 16 and 18 are located near the proximal end 34 of the blanket 10. The apertures 16 and 18 may be located between the pocket 12 and the side 22 of the blanket 10. The apertures 16 and 18 may be sized and positioned to accommodate a seat belt (not depicted) in a vehicle, such as, for example, an airplane, car, bus, or truck, etc. The seat belt may be a lap belt or an over the shoulder belt. In the case of a lap belt, the user may place the blanket on their lap with the upper surface 20 facing upward (facing away from the user's body or legs) and the lower surface 44 (FIG. 2) resting on their lap (facing toward the user's body or legs). The user may insert a first end of the seat belt through aperture 16 from the lower surface 44 (FIG. 2) of the blanket 10 such that it may be seen from the top view of FIG. 1. The user may insert a second end of the seat belt through aperture 18 from the lower surface 44 (FIG. 2) of the blanket 10 such that it may be seen from the top view of FIG. 1. The user may then latch or buckle the seat belt in the known manner such that the buckle of the seat belt is visible and resting on the upper surface 20 of the seat belt. The seat belt and buckle portion may be positioned on the upper surface 20 side of the blanket 10. While the remainder of the seat belt may be on the lower surface 44 side of the blanket 10 because the straps of the seat belt extending from the buckle pass through the apertures 16,18 and extend behind the blanket 10 where the straps are conventionally secured into the seat. It may thus be appreciated that when the blanket is placed on the user's lap, the buckled seat belt may be visible to others who look at the user. Other and additional openings may be contemplated to function with various seat belt configurations depending upon the environment for use. It is contemplated that the apertures and other features of the blanket may be positioned so that the blanket may be reversible, that is, such that the upper surface 20 is the lower surface and the lower surface 44 (FIG. 2) is the upper surface.

[0025] Referring to FIG. 1, the blanket 10 may have a length extending from the side 22 to the end of the pouch 14 and a width extending between side 24 and the opposing side of side 24. The apertures 16, 18 may be located along the length between the pocket 12 and the side 22. The pocket 12 may be located along the length between the apertures 16, 18 and the pouch 14. The pouch 14 may be located at the end of the length of the blanket. The pocket 12 may be located along the width between the two apertures 16, 18, but along the length below (e.g. axially along the length toward the pouch 14, to the right of FIG. 1) the two apertures 16, 18. The first aperture 16 may be located along the width between the pocket 12 and the side 24, but along the length above (e.g. axially along the length toward the proximal end 34, to the left of FIG. 1) the pocket 12. The second aperture 18 may be located along the width between the pocket 12 and the opposing side of side 24, but along the length above (e.g. axially along the length toward the proximal end 34, to the left of FIG. 1) the pocket 12.

[0026] As shown in FIG. 1, the blanket 10 may include flange portions 36 and 38 which extend outward from the outer perimeter 40 of the pouch 14. The flange portions 36 and 38 may extend around a user's lap and legs during use. It may be appreciated that the flange portions 36 and 38 may be sized to accommodate a small user or a large user. That is, the flange portions 36 and 38 may extend outward from the outer perimeter 40 of the pouch 14 at any number of distances. A small extension may accommodate a smaller user and a larger extension may accommodate a larger user. Alternatively, the flange portions 36 and 38 may be omitted, such as, for example, in FIG. 8. Alternatively, the flange portions 36 and 38 may be detachable such that the blanket 10 may be customized to a particular user's size or purpose.

[0027] It may be appreciated from the foregoing disclosure that the pouch 14, pocket 12, and apertures 16 and 18 may any size, shape, orientation, or configuration. Additionally, although the blanket 10 is depicted as generally rectangular, the blanket 10 may be any shape, including, but not limited to circular, square, or oblong, etc. The blanket 10 may be shaped such that the distal end 30 and/or pouch 14 has a smaller width than a width of the proximal end 34. In this shape, one or both of sides 24 may be angled (other than 90 degrees) from one or both of the sides 22. The pocket 12 may be any shape including, but not limited to circular, square, or oblong, etc. The pocket 12 may be located on the upper surface 20 with respect to the apertures 16 and 18. The pocket 12 may be located such that when the blanket is on a user's lap, the pocket 12 is located on the lap of the user or on the legs of the user. The apertures 16 and 18 may be located such that when the blanket is on the users lap, the apertures 16 and 18 are readily accessible for threading a seat belt there through. The apertures 16 and 18 may be angled with respect to the side 22 and/or the side 24. Alternatively, the apertures 16 and 18 may be substantially parallel to the side 22 and/or the side 24.

[0028] Referring to FIG. 2, a bottom view of the blanket 10 is shown. As may be seen, the apertures 16 and 18 extend through the blanket 10 from a lower surface 44 to the upper surface 20 (FIG. 1). The pouch 14 located at the distal end 30 may have an opening 46. The opening 46 may accommodate a user's feet or the portion 32 of the blanket 10. Although not depicted, the opening 46 may have one or more closure devices. The closure device may be, for example, but not limited to a button, snap, zipper, hook and loop, clasp, pin, tie, elastic, or other closing device. The closure device may allow for the portion 32 to be secured within the pouch 14. The closure device may allow for the user's feet to be secured within the pouch 14.

[0029] Referring to FIG. 3, the blanket 10 may be seen in a first step to convert the blanket 10 from the configuration of FIG. 1 to the configuration of FIG. 5. The flange portions 36 and 38 are folded over and onto the lower surface 44 such that the upper surface 20 of each flange portion 36 and 38 may be seen from the bottom of the blanket 10. In FIG. 4, the blanket 10 may be seen in a second step to convert the blanket 10 from the configuration of FIG. 1 to the configuration of FIG. 5. Once the flange portions 36 and 38 are folded inward, the proximal end 34 of the portion 32 of blanket 10 may be folded or rolled until it sized to fit within the pouch 14. As may be seen in FIG. 4, the portion 32 of blanket 10 has been folded or rolled into a position adjacent the pouch 14. The dimension "x" may be the same or smaller than the dimension "y" such that the portion 32 of the blanket 10 may fit within the pouch 14. The portion 32 of blanket 10 may inserted into the opening 46 of the pouch 14. FIG. 5 depicts a second configuration of the blanket 10. In the configuration of FIG. 5, the portion 32 may be substantially within the pouch 14 of the blanket 10. If a closure device is provided, the closure device may be closed to secure the portion 32 within the pouch 14. The configuration of FIG. 1 may be considered the "blanket" configuration. The configuration of FIG. 5 may be considered the "pillow," "seat cushion," or "neck pillow" configuration. Although other uses for the configurations of FIGS. 1 and 5 may be considered.

[0030] Referring to FIG. 6, a top view of the blanket 10 in the configuration of FIG. 5 is shown. In the top view, the closure devices 42a and 42b may be seen. The blanket 10 may be folded or rolled from the configuration of FIG. 6 such that the closure devices 42a align with the closure devices 42b. Where the closure devices 42a, 42b are snaps, they may be snapped together such that the blanket 10 is substantially folded in half from the view of FIG. 6 such as is shown in FIG. 7A. Although snaps are described, the closure devices 42a, 42b may be, for example, but not limited to a button, snap, zipper, hook and loop, clasp, pin, tie, elastic, or other closing device. Other locations and positions of the closure devices may be contemplated to achieve additional folding options and uses of the blanket.

[0031] In the configuration of FIG. 7A, when the closure devices 42a, 42b are secured, the blanket 10 may be used in a "muff" or "hand warmer" configuration, although other uses are contemplated. It may be appreciated that the blanket 10 in the configuration of FIG. 6 may be wrapped around an elongated item, such as a purse strap or luggage handle to achieve the configuration of FIG. 7A. After wrapping around, the closure devices 42a, 42b may be aligned and secured such that the blanket 10 is secured onto the purse strap or luggage handle or other item. One may appreciate the configuration of FIG. 7A allows for ease of transport and carrying of the blanket 10. FIG. 7B shows an end view of the blanket 10 in the configuration of FIG. 7A. In the end view a gap 48 between the folded portions of pouch 4 may be seen. The gap 48 may accommodate a user's arms, hands, or leg, purse strap, or luggage handle, or other item as previously described.

[0032] Referring to FIG. 8, an alternate blanket 100 is shown. The blanket 100 may be the same or substantially similar to the blanket 10 except for the omission of flange portions 36 and 38 (FIG. 1). The blanket 100 may have a portion 132, pouch 114, and apertures 116 and 118, which are substantially the same as portion 32, pouch 14, and apertures 16 and 18 of the blanket 10. Although not depicted, the blanket may have a pocket similar to the pocket 12. When moving the blanket 100 from the configuration of FIG. 8 to the configuration of FIG. 5, all steps may be the same except the step of folding in flange portions 36 and 38 (FIG. 3) may be omitted. The blanket 100 may be used as a blanket, pillow, cushion, or muff as described with respect to blanket 10. As described previously, the flange portions may be detachable. Thus, the blanket 100 may include attachment devices along the sides to couple flange portions to the blanket 100. Any modifications described with respect to the blanket 10 may be provided to the blanket 100.

[0033] Referring to FIG. 9, an alternate blanket 200 is shown. The blanket 200 may be the same or substantially similar to the blanket 10 or 100. Any modifications described with respect to the blanket 10 and/or blanket 100 may be provided to the blanket 200. The blanket 200 may include an upper surface 220 and may have sides 222 and 224 and may be substantially rectangular, although other shapes and sizes are contemplated. A plurality of pockets 212 may extend between the side 224 and the opposing side. The plurality of pockets 212 may be formed as a row of pockets. The plurality of pockets 212 may include a first pocket 212a, a second pocket 212b, a third pocket 212c, and a fourth pocket 212d. Each of the plurality of pockets 212 may have an opening 226. The opening 226 may allow access to the pockets 212 for storage and/or removal of items within the pockets 212. One or more of the plurality of pockets 212 may include closure devices 228. For example, the second pocket 212b and the third pocket 212c may each include a closure device 228, while the first pocket 212a and the fourth pocket 212d may not include a closure device 228. Other arraignments of closure devices 228 may be provided with respect to any or all of the pockets 212. All pockets may have closure devices 228 or no pockets may have closure devices. The closure devices 228 may be the same or similar to the closure device 28.

[0034] Although four pockets 212 are shown, more or fewer may be provided. Although the pockets are shown horizontally across the width of the blanket 200, other arrangements are contemplated. For example, the plurality of pockets may be arranged diagonally (e.g. similar to FIG. 1), vertically, randomly spaced, uniformly spaced, arranged in a rectangular or circular pattern, etc. In another embodiment, the stitching between the plurality of pockets 212 may be omitted such that the pockets 212 are a single pocket extending across the blanket 200. In this embodiment, one or more closure devices 228 may be provided.

[0035] The blanket 200 may include apertures 216, 218. The apertures 216, 218 may be the same or similar as the apertures 16, 18 of blanket 10. The apertures 16, 18 may accommodate a seat belt or safety belt as previously described. Although not visible, the blanket 200 may have a pouch as previously described. The pouch may be the pouch 14 or the pouch 114. The blanket 200 may be formed as a rectangle, similar to the blanket 100 or may be formed with flanges, such as the blanket 10.

[0036] Referring to FIG. 9, the blanket 200 may have a length extending from the side 222 to the opposing side of side 222. The blanket 200 may have a width extending between side 224 and the opposing side of side 224. The apertures 216, 218 may be located along the length between the pockets 212 and the side 222. The pockets 212 may be located along the length between the apertures 216, 218 and the opposing side of side 224. The pouch (not visible) may be located at the end of the length of the blanket at the opposing side of side 224. The pockets 212 may be located along the width and may extend between opposing sides of the blanket 200. The pockets 212 may extend along the length below (e.g. axially along the length toward the pouch, to the right of FIG. 9) the two apertures 216, 218. The first aperture 216 may be located along the width between a center of the pockets 212 and the side 224, but along the length above (e.g. axially along the length toward the side 222, to the left of FIG. 9) the pocket 212. The second aperture 218 may be located along the width between the center of the pockets 212 and the opposing side of side 224, but along the length above (e.g. axially along the length toward the side 222, to the left of FIG. 9) the pockets 212.

[0037] As may be appreciated from the foregoing disclosure, a multi-functional blanket is provided. The blanket may function as a pillow, hand warmer, muff (a cylinder for keeping hands warm), blanket for legs, or neck support. The blanket may have loops or apertures for safety belts and/or seat belts on both sides of the blanket. The blanket may include a front pocket and a pouch or pouches for feet. The blanket may be self-closing. The closure may be a button closure or a zipper closure. The blanket may function like a purse and have a strap or straps to carry the blanket. The blanket may be customized such that it matches the dimensions of the user. The blanket may be a rectangle, square, or other shape. The blanket may be shaped such that the distal end has a smaller width than the proximal end. This shape may allow the blanket to be carried and/or packed smaller and tighter. The blanket may have a button, clasp, or tie for carrying which may be located on a lower surface or upper surface of the blanket. The blanket may be formed from any number of materials, including, but not limited to fleece, cashmere, quilted fabric, polyester, cotton, sweatshirt material, etc. The pouch may be lined with a fabric to provide warmth, such as, for example, fleece. Additional heating options such as electric blanket type heating may be included. The blankets of the foregoing disclosure may be symmetric such that opposing halves or sides of the blankets are mirror images. When folded, the symmetric blanket may allow for features of the blanket to be aligned.

[0038] It may be appreciated from the foregoing disclosure that the blanket may be a lap blanket in the first predetermined configuration designed to keep a user's lower body warm. The blanket may be used by a seated user. When seated, the blanket may accommodate a user's feet and may include a pocket for storing a user's items. The apertures may allow for a seat belt to be visible even when the blanket is on the user's lap. In other predetermined configurations, the blanket may be used as a pillow, muff, hand warmer, lumbar support, neck support, or other configurations. For example, the second predetermined configuration may be the pillow of FIG. 5 or the hand warmer of FIG. 7A, etc. Although described with relation to travel, it may be appreciated that the blanket may have other uses, such as, for example, attending outdoor events, individuals in wheel chairs, or use at home.

[0039] It may be further appreciated that the foregoing disclosure alleviates the following problems:

[0040] 1. Carrying Bulk/Additional Items: The blanket may fold compactly into itself. The blanket may be attached to luggage, or other item, using an opening that is created by connecting the compacted ends together. The blanket may include a pouch for feet warming which may negate the need to carry extra socks.

[0041] 2. Improper arrival dress: The blanket may allow a user to maintain a warm body temperature and may negate the need to dress in layers for warmth. The user may thus dress for their destination.

[0042] 3. Safety Belt Visibility: The blanket may include two openings at the top of the blanket to allow for a seat belt to be slid through in order to maintain visibility of the seat belt and safety of a seated person.

Storage: The blanket may include one or multiple pockets on the lap of the blanket to create a place to store a user's phone or other items to prevent them from falling in-between seats or onto the floor. In addition, this creates easy access for items you may need if traveling, for example, gum, phone, or chap stick, etc.

[0044] 5. Functionality: The blanket may include additional features to provide versatility in carrying one product for multiple uses such as a pillow, blanket, neck support, lumbar support, and hand warmer.

[0045] 6. Size: The blanket may be customized. The blanket may be sized and/or shaped to fit the user (waist down/width) and/or the environment (airplane seat, car seat, or wheel chair, etc.).

Claims

1. A blanket comprising: a blanket portion; a pouch; a first aperture positioned on the blanket portion; a second aperture positioned on the blanket portion; and a pocket, wherein the pocket is positioned relative to the first aperture such that in a first configuration of the blanket, the pocket is located on a lap of a user.

The blanket of claim 1, wherein, in the first configuration, the first aperture is configured to receive a first seat belt portion and the second aperture is configured to receive a second seat belt portion, such that when the first seat belt portion and second seat belt portion are connected, the first seat belt portion and the second seat belt portion are visible on a top surface of the blanket.

3. The blanket of claim 1, wherein the blanket is configured to be moved from a first predetermined configuration to a second predetermined configuration.

4. The blanket of claim 3, wherein the first predetermined configuration is a blanket configuration and the second predetermined configuration is a pillow configuration.

5. The blanket of claim 3, wherein the first predetermined configuration is a pillow configuration and the second predetermined configuration is a muff configuration.

6. The blanket of claim 1, further comprising at least one closure device.

7. The blanket of claim 6, the at least one closure device positioned on the pocket or the pouch for securing an opening of the pocket or the pouch.

8. The blanket of claim 6, the at least one closure device located on an upper surface of the pouch, wherein the at least one closure device is configured to secure the blanket around an object.

10. The blanket of claim 1, wherein the pocket is a plurality of pockets arranged in a row along a width of the blanket.

11. The blanket of claim 1, the blanket portion further comprising a length extending between a first end and a second end; and a width extending between a third end and a fourth end.

12. The blanket of claim 11, wherein the first aperture and the second aperture are located along the length between the pocket and the first end.

13. The blanket of claim 11, wherein the pocket is located along the length between the first aperture and the second end.

14. The blanket of claim 13, wherein the pocket is located along the width between the first aperture and the second aperture.

15. The blanket of claim 1, wherein the blanket is symmetric such that opposing sides of the blanket portion are mirror images of each other.
