Abstract

Beach chair with sun protective device with a folding beach chair frame made of tubular metal and water resistant fabric and a pair of arm supports, a sun shade mounted on a spring retractable roller, a shade attachment bar, a pair of shade attachment hooks, a pair of back extension rods and a pair of leg extension rods. The back extension rods are extendable from the back support tubes of the beach chair frame. The leg extension rods are extendable from the rear leg support tubes of the beach chair frame. The roller and the shade are mounted to the back extension rods so that when a user extends the back extension rods and the leg extension rods, he or she can pull out the shade from the spring roller and attach the shade to the shade attachment hooks to form an overhead sun shade.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

[0004] This invention relates generally to the field of beach chairs and more specifically to beach chair with sun protective device.

[0005] On sunny days in the summer many people go the beaches or just spend time outdoors relaxing while sitting on what has become known as a beach chair. A beach chair is a light weight chair that folds for easy storage and carrying. It is usually made of a tubular metal frame and has a water resistant fabric stretched across the frame to create a back and a seat.

[0006] Because of the dangers of too much UV radiation from the sun, some beach chairs have been designed to include an overhead shade so that a person can have the relaxing benefit of sitting in a sunny location but can still be protected from the potentially harmful rays of the sun.

[0007] Numerous proposals have been made aiming at providing beach chairs with sun-protective means including one found in my own U.S. Pat. No. 7,431,388. However, there is a deficiency in my prior design in that the sun shade comes down from the extended back support rods to the front arm rest extension rods in a rather steep angle thereby causing the shade to pass directly in front of the face of the user which can feel restrictive to the user's head and view while sitting in the chair.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

[0008] The primary object of the invention is to provide a beach chair with an extendable sun protecting shade that does not overly restrict the user's view while sitting in the chair yet still gives substantial protection from the sun's harmful UV rays.

[0009] Other objects and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following descriptions, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein, by way of illustration and example, an embodiment of the present invention is disclosed.

[0010] In accordance with a preferred embodiment of the invention, there is disclosed beach chair with sun protective device comprising: a folding beach chair frame made of tubular metal and water resistant fabric and a pair of arm supports, a sun shade mounted on a spring retractable roller, a shade attachment bar, a pair of shade attachment hooks, a pair of back extension rods, a pair of leg extension rods, said back extension rods telescoping into and extendable from the back support tubes of said beach chair frame, said leg extension rods telescoping into and extendable from the rear leg support tubes of said beach chair frame, said roller and said shade mounted in a horizontal fashion between the top end of said back extension rods, said shade attachment bar fixedly attached to the pull out end of of said shade, said leg extension rods terminating in said shade attachment hooks so that when a user extends said back extension rods and said leg extension rods, he or she can pull out said shade from said spring roller and attach the left and right ends of said shade attachment bar to said shade attachment hooks to form an overhead sun shade that can protect a person while sitting in said beach chair and yet not overly restrict the user's vision or be uncomfortably close to the user's head.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS

Therefore, specific details disclosed herein are not to be interpreted as limiting, but rather as a basis for the claims and as a representative basis for teaching one skilled in the art to employ the present invention in virtually any appropriately detailed system, structure or manner.

[0017] Referring now to FIG. 1 we see a perspective view of the beach chair of the present invention 100 in the unextended position. The chair looks somewhat similar to a standard beach chair having a water resistant fabric back rest portion 26 a water resistant fabric seat rest portion 46 supported by a tubular metal frame comprised of front leg members 44, rear leg members 32, back support tubes 42, 44 shown by dotted lines, and seat support tubes 48, 50. A pair of telescoping extendable rods 8, 10 are situated within back support tubes 42, 44 and terminate in a horizontally disposed spring roll shade assembly 34 terminating in a shade attachment bar 20. An additional pair of extendable rods 8, 10 shown in FIG. 2 are situated within leg tubes 31, 32 and terminate in attachment hooks 18, 16. A pair of slots 38, 40 in arm rests 36, 30 allow a pair of extension rods 12, 14 which reside inside leg members 31, 32 shown in FIG. 2, to pass through when in the extended mode. The front extension rods 12, 14 each terminate in a hook 16, 18 that can engage the left and right ends of shade attachment bar 20 when the rods 12, 14 are extended as shown in FIG. 2.

[0018] FIG. 2 shows a person 28 sitting in the beach chair of the present invention 100. The rear extension rods 8, 10 and front extension rods 12, 14 are fully extended and support rolled out shade 2 from roller 34. Attachment hooks 16, 18 are secured to the ends of attachment rod 20 so that the shade 2 forms a generous shading member for the user 28. If the user wishes to get up from the chair, he can easily unhook the hooks 16, 18 from the attachment bar 20 and do so. The upward angle of the front extension rods 12, 14 lift the shade 2 sufficiently that the user's head 28 does not feel overly confined by the shade 2. Additionally, the shade 2 does not overly block the view of the user 28.

Claims

1. beach chair with sun protective device comprising: a folding beach chair frame made of tubular metal and water resistant fabric and a pair of arm supports; a sun shade mounted on a spring retractable roller; a shade attachment bar; a pair of shade attachment hooks; a pair of back extension rods; a pair of leg extension rods; said back extension rods telescoping into and extendable from the back support tubes of said beach chair frame; said leg extension rods telescoping into and extendable from the rear leg support tubes of said beach chair frame; said roller and said shade mounted in a horizontal fashion between the top end of said back extension rods; said shade attachment bar fixedly attached to the pull out end of of said shade said leg extension rods terminating in said shade attachment hooks; and so that when a user extends said back extension rods and said leg extension rods, he or she can pull out said shade from said spring roller and attach the left and right ends of said shade attachment bar to said shade attachment hooks to form an overhead sun shade that can protect a person while sitting in said beach chair.
