In Gefitinib-treated patients, those with higher levels of nuclear pAKT driven by PTEN loss, higher levels of nuclear pMAPK, and lower levels of nuclear pmTOR had significantly worse clinical outcomes. In contrast, in non-Gefitinib-treated patients, patients with PTEN-deficiency, and higher levels of EGFRvIII, total EGFR, IGFR1, NFkB and lower levels of nuclear Survivin appeared to have adverse clinical outcomes, highlighting the treatment-dependency of these biomarkers.06-10-2010
20120270233ASSOCIATION OF BIOMARKERS WITH PATIENT OUTCOME - The present method relates to quantification of prognostic and predictive biomarkers of the PDK/AKT/mTOR pathway, such as GSK3β, S6, CREB, PTEN, AKT and mTOR, using AQUA® analysis to estimate both patient risk and benefit of treatment to patients diagnosed with glioblastoma. Unlike traditional IHC, the AQUA® system is objective and produces quantitative in situ protein expression data on a continuous scale. Taking advantage of the power of the AQUA system, the present method provides a highly robust and standardized diagnostic assays that can be used in the clinical setting to provide physicians with reliable prognostic and predictive information. Glioblastoma multiform (GBM) remains one of the most aggressive human cancers, and biomarkers that provide prognostic and predictive information would be extremely valuable to both the physician and the patient. A patient's risk may be determined using the prognostic biomarkers of the present method. Such a prognostic determination will allow physicians to identify patients with a relatively ‘good’ or a relatively ‘poor’ prognosis. The benefit of treating specific patients with a specific therapy, may be determined usin̂ the predictive markers of the present method. Treatment with the AGC-family kinase inhibitor enzastaurin, for example, identifies patients that will likely benefit from treatment or not.10-25-2012

20120063704Multilayer Plastic Film - A thermoplastic bag suitable for use as a liner for a garbage canister or trash receptacle may be made from a multi-layered thermoplastic web material. The multi-layer web material may include a first layer and a second layer adjacent to the first layer. Under typical conditions, the layers may tend to block or adhere together to remain in their adjacent position. However, the layers may delaminate and separate from each other when sufficient forces are applied. Delamination of the layers allows the layers to move with respect to each other when the force is applied. The delaminating of the layers absorbs energy which may increase tear and puncture resistance.03-15-2012
20120064271Multi-Layered Lightly-Laminated Films and Methods of Making The Same - Apparatus and methods for creating multi-layered lightly-laminated provide films with increased or maintained strength. An increased level of strength is achieved by bonding adjacent layers of the multi-layer film together in a manner that the bond strength of the laminated layers is less than a strength of a weakest tear resistance of the individual first and second film layers. The inventors have surprisingly found that such a configuration of light bonding provides increased and unexpected strength properties to the multi-layer film as compared to a monolayer film of equal thickness or a multi-layer film in which the plurality of layers are tightly bonded together.03-15-2012

20110295273DEVICE FOR APPLYING LIQUID SKINCARE PRODUCTS IN COMBINATION WITH VACUUM AND ABRASION - A liquid delivery wand includes a centrally located fluid storage chamber. An absorbent pad is located within the working end of the wand for applying the treatment liquid to the skin while a vacuum is applied to the skin through an abrasive coated treatment tip. Coaxial, cylindrical tubes with flow channels between tube surfaces control the flow rate, the pressure drop being established by the close fit and length of adjacent surfaces of the coaxial components. The flow rate of the liquid is adjustable by simply rotating the interfitting components. The chamber that holds the liquid is sealed from the atmosphere at the distal and proximal end. When the wand is connected to vacuum and the distal end contacts the skin, the vacuum applies a negative pressure to the fluids within a fluid chamber. A small portion of liquid is thus transferred to wet the filter pad.12-01-2011

20090192447Gas vent valve assembly - A gas vent valve assembly may be attached or incorporated to a disposable fluid transfer set used with a fluid warmer to administer an infusate to a patient. The gas vent valve assembly has a housing having a fluid inlet, a gas outlet and a fluid outlet. The gas outlet is located at the top of the housing while the fluid outlet is located at the bottom of the housing. The fluid inlet is located at a side lower portion of the housing. Inside the housing is an actuator float that has an upper seal and a lower seal. The dimension of the float relative to the chamber of the housing is such that the float is freely movable within the housing to an upper position whereby its upper seal closes the gas outlet while the fluid outlet is opened, and to a lower position whereby its lower seal closes the fluid outlet and the gas outlet is opened. The movement of the float is dependent on the respective amounts of air and fluid in the housing, and the buoyancy of the float relative to the fluid in the housing. When a predetermined volume of air gets inside the housing, the float sinks to its lower position to close the fluid outlet and open the gas outlet, so that the air inside the housing is vented to atmosphere while fluid is prevented from being output to the patient. When the amount of gas in the chamber has been reduced to a given volume, with a corresponding increase in the amount of fluid in the housing, the float is raised to open the fluid outlet, thereby enabling the fluid inside the housing to be output to the patient. At that time, the gas outlet is shut to prevent any reverse inflow of air into the housing.07-30-2009
