20090306429 | PREPARATION OF A QUATERNARY AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE AND USE THEREOF FOR THE PREPARATION OF A QUATERNARY AMMONIUM SALT - The invention relates to a process for the preparation of a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, in particular denatonium hydroxide, and the use thereof for the preparation of a quaternary ammonium salt, in particular of denatonium benzoate or a denatonium fatty acid derivative. Due to its extremely bitter taste, this latter compound is applied in the art as an aversive agent, biocide, antifoulant and flavorant. It is usually prepared from a quaternary ammonium halide in an organic environment, which after isolation and purification is converted to a hygroscopic and unstable hydroxide intermediate, which in turn is immediately converted to the salt of interest in the solvent in which it is prepared. It is now found that these isolation steps can be avoided by performing the reaction at aqueous conditions. This is more straightforwardly and does not require costly precautions to avoid contact while handling. Moreover, the process of the invention allows to produce the quaternary ammonium salt from a lignocaine compound in a one-pot synthesis involving mostly water. | 12-10-2009 |

20120098672 | ARC Fault Detection Method and Apparatus - Load current from an electrical AC supply circuit is monitored so that both high frequency (10-100 kHz), and low frequency (60 Hz) signal current components are measured over certain time periods. A high frequency energy component is measured in an integral fashion, e.g., summing a plurality of samples taken. A certain amount of high frequency energy during a half-cycle is required to indicate an arc event. A certain number of these arc events per half-cycle must occur within a specific time period to indicate the presence of an arc. The root-mean-square (RMS) value of the low frequency energy component is used to determine the severity of the arc. The higher the amperage of the load current arc, the faster the arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) will respond by disconnecting the arcing load from the AC supply circuit, e.g., fewer number of arc events necessary for tripping of the AFCI. | 04-26-2012 |

20110289956 | Frost Free Sub Zero Air Conditioner - The present invention provides an energy efficient air conditioner that can provide a continuous supply of air at dew point that is several degrees Celsius below zero, without requiring a defrost cycle. The air conditioner in accordance to present invention comprises a plurality of cooling coils with interconnecting refrigerant piping, refrigeration circuit consisting of compressor and condenser coils, control circuit and one or more electric motor driven centrifugal fan. The present invention uses two cooling systems. The first cooling system having single coil cools the air to a temperature just above zero deg. C., say four deg. C. so that the second stage gets a steady supply of cold air. The second stage has two coils, each being half the size of the first stage coil, thus taking half the air from it so that all the air from stage 1 passes through stage 2. In operation, only one coil of the second stage is active arid chills the air going through it to say minus 14 Deg. C. The other coil, being inactive, passes on the +4 Deg. C. air coming from the first stage. In order to prevent the active coil from icing up, a control circuit diverts the refrigerant to the second coil within a period short enough to prevent any significant ice build up in that coil. This goes on so that the total air flow is a steady 50% mixture of air at 4 Deg. C. and minus 14 deg. C. This works out to minus 5 Deg. C. at the output. | 12-01-2011 |
