The inner layer is modified with functional groups that act as ion-exchangers. Small molecules such as RNA and proteins can enter the inner part of the resin and larger genomic DNA molecules will pass through the resin. One important difference in the design of the stent of the present invention is that the helical connectors are attached to every other crown (rather than connected to every crown) to further improve stent flexibility.
