20110023668 | Recovery of high value rubber from tires - A process for recovering rubber from a tire, the tire including a rubber tread block, a reinforced portion below the tread block portion, typically known as steel belting, and an inner liner that serves to hold the air pressure in the tire. The bead and sidewall are removed from the tire leaving a loop of tread material. Next, the loop is placed on several rollers of a rubber-separating machine to hold the loop in place. One or more cutting blades, preferably chisels, are positioned at the tread portion of the tire. The cutting blades are lowered into position. Access to the steel belting can be accomplished by making an initial cut through tread block to expose the steel belting. Once the blades are in place, the tread loop is placed in motion around the rollers. As the blades contact the steel belts, the cutting blades separate the tread rubber from the reinforced rubber at the interface between the tread rubber and the steel belts. The inner layer may also be removed in a similar fashion with blades positioned within the loop rather than above it. | 02-03-2011 |

20100057166 | System and Method for Measuring and Fitting Spatio-Temporal Vision - This system gives the experimenter great flexibility to present spatio-temporal stimulation patterns to a subject. A video configuration file (VCF) editor allows the experimenter to determine the electrical stimulation parameters for each electrode. A Pattern Stimulation software program allows direct stimulation of chosen patterns of electrodes, scaled by the subject's VCF, through a Graphical User Interface. The subject then responds by drawing the outline of the phosphene he or she perceives on a touchscreen. The Pattern Stimulation program saves all of the trial parameters and the parameters of an ellipse fit to their drawing, as well as a raw data file containing the input to the touchscreen is saved. After the experiment, offline image analysis can be performed to obtain a detailed quantitative description of the subject's percepts. Image descriptors can assigned to the touchscreen data; these image descriptors can be used to make formalized comparisons between various experimental conditions. Various types of image descriptors can be used, including simple ellipse fitting, projections of the 2-D drawings onto one-dimensional axes, calculations of Hu moments, PCA, and ICA. | 03-04-2010 |
20100087895 | Techniques and Functional Electrical Stimulation to Eliminate Discomfort During Electrical Stimulation of the Retina - Techniques and functional electrical stimulation to eliminate discomfort during electrical stimulation of the retina are provided. According to a first technique, discomfort is eliminated through control of timing group assignment. According to a second technique, discomfort is eliminated through an edge detection method. According to a third technique, brightness clipping is used to eliminate discomfort. According to a fourth technique, direct reduction of current is obtained by scaling it down by a factor which is dependent on the sum of current in all electrodes. According to a fifth technique, the current being fed to each electrode is adjusted, by dividing it by a weighted sum of currents fed to the surrounding electrodes. According to a sixth technique, a method based on the current summation effect is used. According to a seventh technique, a large return electrode is used. According to an eighth technique, the return electrode is used for a pseudo-multi-polar stimulation. | 04-08-2010 |
20100241192 | Fitting of Brightness as a Function of Current Amplitude in a Visual Prosthesis - To accurately represent a visual scene a visual prosthesis must convey luminance information across a range of brightness levels. To do this, the brightness of phosphenes produced by an individual electrode should scale appropriately with luminance, and the same luminance should produce equivalently bright phosphenes across the entire electrode array. Given that the function relating current to brightness varies across electrodes, it is necessary to develop a fitting procedure that will permit brightness to be equated across an entire array. | 09-23-2010 |
20100249878 | Visual Prosthesis Fitting Training and Assessment System and Method - The present invention is an improved fitting and training system for a visual prosthesis. A patient, using the visual prosthesis observes a display and indicates location, movement, shape or other properties of the display image to provide for improved fitting and training. In one embodiment, the patient uses a touch screen monitory which displays an image. The patient touches the monitor at the location where the patient perceives the image. The system then corrects the image to the location indicated by the patient. In another embodiment a patient observes an image moving across the touch screen monitor and indicates by moving their hand across the monitor which direction the believe the image is moving. The system can then rotate the image to match the image perceived by the patient. | 09-30-2010 |
20140046210 | Field of View Matching in a Visual Prosthesis - A visual prosthesis apparatus including a video capture device for capturing a video image, a video processing unit associated with the video capture device, the video processing unit configured to convert the video image to stimulation patterns, and a stimulation system configured to stimulate subject's neural tissue based on the stimulation patterns, wherein the stimulation system provides a span of visual angle matched to the subject's neural tissue being stimulated. | 02-13-2014 |
20140107748 | Visual Prosthesis for Control of Spatiotemporal Interactions - In a visual prosthesis or other neural stimulator it is advantageous to provide non-overlapping pulses in order to provide independent control of brightness from different electrodes. Non-overlapping pulses on geographically close electrodes avoid electric-field interaction which leads to brightness summation or changes in the shape and area of percepts. It is advantageous to apply pulses to nearby electrodes in a way that the currents do not overlap in time at all. The new finding is that even a small amount of separation results in a significant improvement as small as (ie. 0.225 msec). ‘Nearby’ is defined as within a few millimeters of each other. Another new finding is that there is some additional benefit of separating the pulses in time even further. In particular, some experiments showed a benefit of separating them more than 1.8 msec. Another experiment showed a benefit of separating them greater than 3 msec. But, there is probably no benefit to separating them more than 5 msec. The same parameters that provide independent control of brightness also produce spatial patterns that the subjects' report as being similar to the sum of individual electrode phosphenes. Simultaneous stimulation of multiple electrodes can sometimes produce physical sensation or discomfort in the eye. Time-shifting the pulses can also be used to reduce the physical sensations felt by the patient. | 04-17-2014 |
20140200628 | Fitting of Brightness as a Function of Current Amplitude in a Visual Prosthesis - To accurately represent a visual scene a visual prosthesis must convey luminance information across a range of brightness levels. | 07-17-2014 |

20150051666 | Video Configuration File Editor for Visual Prosthesis Fitting - A method of editing a video configuration file downloadable to or from a video processing unit of a fitting system for a visual prosthesis is shown. The visual prosthesis has a plurality of electrodes and the video configuration file defines mapping of a video signal captured from a camera of the visual prosthesis to an electrical signal for the electrodes. The editing controls a brightness map for an individual electrode or electrode groups, together with a temporal stimulation pattern to which an individual electrode or electrode groups are assigned. A related computer-operated system is also disclosed. | 02-19-2015 |
20150066106 | Flexible Circuit Electrode Array Embedded in a Cured Body - Polymer materials are useful as electrode array bodies for neural stimulation. They are particularly useful for retinal stimulation to create artificial vision, cochlear stimulation to create artificial hearing, and cortical stimulation, and many related purposes. The pressure applied against the retina, or other neural tissue, by an electrode array is critical. Too little pressure causes increased electrical resistance, along with electric field dispersion. Too much pressure may block blood flow. Common flexible circuit fabrication techniques generally require that a flexible circuit electrode array be made flat. Since neural tissue is almost never flat, a flat array will necessarily apply uneven pressure. Further, the edges of a flexible circuit polymer array may be sharp and cut the delicate neural tissue. It is advantageous that the array edges not contact tissue. | 03-05-2015 |

20090031732 | Low speed rotor shaft for a small twin spool gas turbine engine - An inner rotor shaft for use in a small twin spool gas turbine engine, the inner rotor shaft having a hollow middle section formed of a smaller diameter hollow section on a compressor end and a larger diameter hollow section on the turbine end of the shaft. Solid shaft end extend from the hollow section to form a forward solid shaft end to secure the fan rotor disk and an aft solid shaft end to secure the turbine rotor disk. A parabolic shaped transition section joins the forward shaft end to the smaller diameter hollow section, and a conical shaped transition section joins the aft shaft end to the larger diameter hollow section. A conical shaped transition piece joins the two hollow sections together to form an inner rotor shaft that can fit within a minimal space between the compressor rotor disk and the annular combustor assembly of the engine. The conical shaped transition section on the turbine end is so shaped in order to fit within a space formed inside the high pressure turbine rotor disk of the engine in order to minimize the axial spacing between the bearings that support the inner rotor shaft and raise the critical speed of the shaft to a safe level above the operating speed of the engine in order to make such a small twin spool gas turbine engine possible. | 02-05-2009 |
