20090230318 | TARGET DESIGN FOR HIGH-POWER LASER ACCELERATED IONS - Methods for designing a laser-accelerated ion beam are disclosed. The methods include modeling a system including a heavy ion layer, an electric field, and high energy light positive ions having a maximum light positive ion energy, correlating physical parameters of the heavy ion layer, the electric field, and the maximum light positive ion energy using the model, and varying the parameters of the heavy ion layer to optimize the energy distribution of the high energy light positive ions. One method includes analyzing the acceleration of light positive ions, for example protons, through interaction of a high-power laser pulse with a double-layer target using two-dimensional particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations and a one-dimensional analytical model. The maximum energy acquired by the accelerated light positive ions, e.g., protons, in this model depends on the physical characteristics of the heavy-ion layer—the electron-ion mass ratio and effective charge state of the ions. The hydrodynamic equations for both electron and heavy ion species solved and the test-particle approximation for the protons is applied. It was found that the heavy ion motion modifies the longitudinal electric field distribution, thus changing the acceleration conditions for the light positive ions. | 09-17-2009 |

20090050819 | Laser-Accelerated Proton Therapy Units And Superconducting Electromagnet Systems For Same - Compact particle selection and collimation devices are disclosed for delivering beams of protons with desired energy spectra. These devices are useful with laser-accelerated proton therapy systems, in which the initial protons have broad energy and angular distributions. Superconducting magnet systems produce a desired magnetic field configuration to spread the protons with different energies and emitting angles for particle selection. The simulation of proton transport in the presence of the magnetic field shows that the selected protons are successfully refocused on the beam axis after passing through the magnetic field with the optimal magnet system. Dose distributions are also provided using Monte Carlo simulations of the laser-accelerated proton beams for radiation therapy applications. | 02-26-2009 |
20100320394 | METHODS AND SYSTEMS FOR INCREASING THE ENERGY OF POSITIVE IONS ACCELERATED BY HIGH-POWER LASERS - The energy of positive ions accelerated in laser-matter interaction experiments can be significantly increased by providing a plurality of laser pulses, e.g., through the process of splitting the incoming laser pulse, to form multiple laser-matter interaction stages. From a thermodynamic point of view, the splitting procedure can be viewed as an effective way of increasing the efficiency of energy transfer from the laser light to positive ions, which energy peaks for processes having the least amount of entropy gain. A 100% increase in the energy efficiency is achieved for a six-stage laser positive ion accelerator compared to a single-stage laser positive ion accelerator. | 12-23-2010 |

20110225394 | INSTRUCTION BREAKPOINTS IN A MULTI-CORE, MULTI-THREAD NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS PROCESSOR ARCHITECTURE - Described embodiments provide a packet classifier for a network processor that generates tasks corresponding to each received packet. The packet classifier includes a scheduler to generate threads of contexts corresponding to tasks received by the packet classifier from a plurality of processing modules of the network processor. A multi-thread instruction engine processes instructions corresponding to threads received from the scheduler. The multi-thread instruction engine executes instructions by fetching an instruction of the thread from an instruction memory of the packet classifier and determining whether a breakpoint mode of the network processor is enabled. If the breakpoint mode is enabled, and breakpoint indicator of the fetched instruction is set, the packet classifier enters a breakpoint mode. Otherwise, if the breakpoint indicator of the fetched instruction is not set, the multi-thread instruction engine executes the fetched instruction. | 09-15-2011 |
20110225588 | REDUCING DATA READ LATENCY IN A NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS PROCESSOR ARCHITECTURE - Described embodiments provide address translation for data stored in at least one shared memory of a network processor. A processing module of the network processor generates tasks corresponding to each of a plurality of received packets. A packet classifier generates contexts for each task, each context associated with a thread of instructions to apply to the corresponding packet. A first subset of instructions is stored in a tree memory within the at least one shared memory. A second subset of instructions is stored in a cache within a multi-thread engine of the packet classifier. The multi-thread engine maintains status indicators corresponding to the first and second subsets of instructions within the cache and the tree memory and, based on the status indicators, accesses a lookup table while processing a thread to translate between an instruction number and a physical address of the instruction in the first and second subset of instructions. | 09-15-2011 |
20130089098 | Changing a Flow Identifier of a Packet in a Multi-Thread, Multi-Flow Network Processor - Described embodiments classify packets received by a network processor. A processing module of the network processor generates tasks corresponding to each received packet. A packet classification processor determines, independent of a flow identifier of the received task, control data corresponding to each task. A multi-thread instruction engine processes threads of instructions corresponding to received tasks, each task corresponding to a packet flow of the network processor and maintains a thread status table and a sequence counter for each flow. Active threads are tracked by the thread status table, and each status entry includes a sequence value and a flow value identifying the flow. Each sequence counter generates a sequence value for each thread by incrementing the sequence counter each time processing of a thread for the associated flow is started, and decrementing the sequence counter each time a thread for the associated flow is completed. | 04-11-2013 |
