20100067741 | Real-time tracking of non-rigid objects in image sequences for which the background may be changing - A method and apparatus is disclosed for tracking an arbitrarily moving object in a sequence of images where the background may be changing. The tracking is based on visual features, such as color or texture, where regions of images (such as those which represent the object being tracked or the background) can be characterized by statistical distributions of feature values. The method improves on the prior art by incorporating a means whereby characterizations of the background can be rapidly re-learned for each successive image frame. This makes the method robust against the scene changes that occur when the image capturing device moves. It also provides robustness in difficult tracking situations, such as when the tracked object passes in front of backgrounds with which it shares similar colors or other features. Furthermore, a method is disclosed for automatically detecting and correcting certain kinds of errors which may occur when employing this or other tracking methods. | 03-18-2010 |

20120138864 | NON-CRYSTALLINE MATERIALS HAVING COMPLETE PHOTONIC, ELECTRONIC, OR PHONONIC BAND GAPS - The invention provides an article of manufacture, and methods of designing and making the article. The article permits or prohibits waves of energy, especially photonic/electromagnetic energy, to propagate through it, depending on the energy band gaps built into it. The structure of the article may be reduced to a pattern of points having a hyperuniform distribution. The point-pattern may exhibit a crystalline symmetry, a quasicrystalline symmetry or may be aperiodic. In some embodiments, the point pattern exhibits no long-range order. Preferably, the point-pattern is isotropic. In all embodiments, the article has a complete, TE- and TM-optimized band-gap. The extraordinary transmission phenomena found in the disordered hyperuniform photonic structures of the invention find use in optical micro-circuitry (all-optical, electronic or thermal switching of the transmission), near-field optical probing, thermophotovoltaics, and energy-efficient incandescent sources. | 06-07-2012 |

20130324964 | HEMODIALYSIS CATHETER WITH DISPLACEABLE LUMENS TO DISRUPT A FIBROUS SHEET - A hemodialysis catheter with an integrated means of displacing away from each other portions of a distal end of a tube assembly. The displacement serves to allow a fibrous sheath to be disrupted without removing the catheter from a patient. | 12-05-2013 |
20150182358 | STENT TO ASSIST IN ARTERIOVENOUS FISTULA FORMATION - There is described an arteriovenous fistula stent, having a tubular body comprising a series of sinusoidal shaped struts along the length of the tubular body. A plurality of curvilinear connectors extend between and are attached to adjacent struts wherein a first end of a connector is attached to a distal face of a proximal strut apex and a second end of a connector is attached to a proximal face of a distal strut apex. A pair of unconnected strut apexes are between pairs of connected apexes. When the tubular body is in a stowed configuration a proximal aperture and a distal aperture are circular and when the tubular body is in a deployed configuration the distal aperture is oblong or ovoid. There is also described a method for inserting a stent for use in creation of an arteriovenous fistula by identifying a candidate artery and a candidate vein and dissecting the candidate vein. Next, inserting a stent into the vein and creating a breach in the candidate artery at a desired angle and location. Next, introducing the stent and vein into the candidate artery and forming the stent into a curvature angle selected to minimize turbulent blood flow in an anastomosis formed by the vein and the artery. Optionally, there is a step of fastening a distal portion of the stent to the artery. | 07-02-2015 |

20110018532 | INTEGRATED MAGNETIC FIELD GENERATION AND DETECTION PLATFORM - An integrated magnetic field generation and detection platform is described that is capable of manipulating and detecting individual magnetic particles, such as spherical super-paramagnetic beads, and providing biosensing functionality. The platform is implemented in an integrated circuit, a portion of the surface of which is functionalized with one or more biochemical agents that binds tightly (i.e., specifically) with a target analyte. The magnetic beads are similarly functionalized with one or more biochemical agents that that bind specifically with the target analyte. When a sample is introduced, magnetic beads that specifically bind to the integrated circuit can be separated from non-specifically bound beads and detected. | 01-27-2011 |
