20110264639LEARNING DIVERSE RANKINGS OVER DOCUMENT COLLECTIONS - A document selector selects and ranks documents that are relevant to a query. The document selector executes an instance of a multi-armed bandits algorithm to select a document for each slot of a results page according to one or more strategies. The documents are selected in an order defined by the results page and documents selected for previous slots are used to guide the selection of a document for a current slot. If a document in a slot is subsequently selected, the strategy used to select the document is rewarded with positive feedback. When the uncertainty in an estimate of the utility of a strategy is less than the variation between documents associated with the strategy, the strategy is subdivided into multiple strategies. The document selector is able to “zoom in” on effective strategies and provide more relevant search results.10-27-2011
20110289063Query Intent in Information Retrieval - Inferring query intent in information retrieval is described. In an example reformulations of an initial query by a user are used to create a query neighborhood. In the example, the query neighborhood is used to identify a set of possibly related queries. First and higher order reformulations of the initial query may be used to expand the query neighborhood. In an example precision can be improved by reducing the query neighborhood to more closely related queries for example, two queries can be connected if they are often clicked for the same document. In an example two queries can be connected using a random walk and all pairs of queries that are not connected by a random walk of less than a fixed threshold are removed. The connected queries can be used to form clusters and weights can be applied in order to determine the most likely related queries.11-24-2011

20120117043Measuring Duplication in Search Results - Measuring duplication in search results is described. In one example, duplication between a pair of results provided by an information retrieval system in response to a query is measured. History data for the information retrieval system is accessed and query data retrieved, which describes the number of times that users have previously selected either or both of the pair of results, and a relative presentation sequence of the pair of results when displayed at each selection. From the query data, a fraction of user selections is determined in which a predefined combination of one or both of the pair of results were selected for a predefined presentation sequence. From the fraction, a measure of duplication between the pair of results is found. In further examples, the information retrieval system uses the measure of duplication to determine an overall redundancy value for a result set, and controls the result display accordingly.05-10-2012
20120150837OPTIMIZING BLENDING ALGORITHMS USING INTERLEAVING - Methods and computer-readable media are provided for interleaving multiple sets of blended search results to identify a preferred set of blended search results for a search query or for a category of search queries. A search query is received and routed to multiple ranking systems, which return search results that are blended into sets of blended search results. Interleaving experiments are performed to determined, based on user preferences, which set of blended search results are preferred for that particular search query. Based on the outcome, a preferred blending algorithm is identified.06-14-2012
20120150847EFFICIENT USE OF COMPUTATIONAL RESOURCES FOR INTERLEAVING - Methods and computer-readable media are provided for improving the efficiency of the interleaving process. Once it is determined that a search query is to be used in an interleaving experiment, a primary ranking system and a secondary ranking system are analyzed to determine whether their respective search results for that search query would be identical. If the search results would be identical, the search query is routed only to the primary ranking system and not the secondary ranking system. If, however, it is determined that the search results would not be identical, both the primary ranking system and the secondary ranking system receive the search query for processing.06-14-2012
20120317104Using Aggregate Location Metadata to Provide a Personalized Service - Functionality is described herein which generates a plurality of item models based on the aggregate behavior of users, such as the aggregate behavior of the users in selecting network-accessible sites and/or issuing particular queries. In one implementation, each item model estimates a probabilistic distribution of locations for an individual, given that the individual selects a particular item (e.g., a particular site or query). The functionality can use the item models to provide a personalized service to an end user. For example, in one scenario, the functionality can generate a plurality of location-based features based on the item models. The functionality can then learn a ranking model based on the location-based features. In a real-time phase of operation, a query processing system uses the ranking model to personalize search results for an end user.12-13-2012

20080222417Method, System, And Apparatus For Nested Security Access/Authentication With Media Initiation - The disclosure details a nested security access system that manages access points/verification requests to create a series of layered security applications for securing access/user identification data. The NSA system works in coordination with an access point/verification module to generate a series of instructions as a login/verification module that may be executed locally. The login/verification module is executed by the access point/verification module to create a system user access/verification data entry form. Depending on the implementation, the access point/verification module may be configured to accept typed text or clicked image access/verification data, token access/verification data or selected image sequence access/verification data. The process of selected image sequence access involves the system user selecting a series of images that represent individual elements of a password without having to type the information into a data entry form.09-11-2008

20120306627AUTOMATIC MODE DETECTION IN A DUAL OPERATING MODE RFID TAG - A multi-mode, preferably dual mode, radio frequency identification (RFID) tag is adapted for automatic detection of whether a RFID reader located within communication range of the RFID tag is transmitting a continuous wave (CW) or modulated wave types of RF signal, and accordingly, mandating a response from the tag in read-only (RO) mode or read/write (R/W) mode, respectively. The tag includes means for designating one of the RO and R/W operating modes as a default mode of the tag, and for switching the tag from its default mode to its other operating mode, and vice versa, according to a rule for determining the frequency of occurrence of a selected event related to signal type of the reader. A device-implemented method of this automatic detection, and a method of fabricating the tag, are also disclosed.12-06-2012

20100046653TIME REFERENCE IDENTIFICATION METHOD - In a method of identifying a time reference in signal received from a transmitter, a replica of a synchronization sequence is generated on the basis of at least one known transmission parameter and is compared to a sequence derived from the signal received from the transmitter to identify a reference point in the signal received from the transmitter.02-25-2010
20110200073DEVICE AND METHOD FOR ESTIMATING DOPPLER SPREAD IN A MOBILE COMMUNICATIONS TERMINAL - The invention is suitable for use in an OFDM system, such as the 3GPP-LTE mobile phone system. A method of estimating Doppler spread in a mobile communications device includes: (a) selecting a channel estimate from each of a sequence of time slots at each of a series of selected sub-carrier frequencies; (b) performing a Digital Fourier Transform (DFT) on the selected channel estimates at each selected sub-carrier frequency to thereby compute DFT components at different frequency bins; (c) summing the DFT components at all selected sub-carrier frequencies for each different frequency bin; (d) detecting the frequency bin at which the summed DFT components first falls below a predetermined threshold; and (e) converting the detected frequency bin into a Doppler spread estimate.08-18-2011
20120320961CHANNEL ESTIMATION FOR OFDM SYSTEMS - A device for performing channel estimation in an OFDM system includes a non-volatile memory, a G matrix selector and a channel estimate generator. The non-volatile memory stores a set of G matrices indexed by signal to noise ratio, the G matrices being precalculated for a plurality of signal to noise ratios using a fixed Doppler frequency and a fixed delay spread. The G matrix selector uses a quantised signal to noise ratio to select a G matrix from the set of G matrices stored in the non-volatile memory. The channel estimate generator multiplies the selected G matrix by LS estimates for the reference signal to obtain a channel estimation.12-20-2012
