20090187999 | Process for Producing Exogenous Protein in the Milk of Transgenic Mammals and a Process For Purifying Proteins Therefrom - The invention relates to a non-human transgenic mammal that is useful for the production of a protein of interest that may be toxic to the mammal. The mammal is characterized by the fact that it is transgenic for the production in its milk of an inactive form of the protein of interest, preferably recombinant human insulin. It is not possible to produce recombinant human insulin in transgenic mammals since this molecule has a certain degree of biological activity in the mammals and could be toxic to the mammal. Thus, the invention involves cloning a genetic construct comprising a sequence encoding a modified human insulin precursor under the control of a beta casein promoter in an expression vector. It also involves transfecting the expression plasmid into fetal bovine somatic cells, such as fibroblasts, and enucleating bovine oocytes by nuclear transfer to generate transgenic embryos. The invention gives rise to transgenic bovine that will be able to produce a modified human insulin precursor in their mammary glands. Afterwards, the milk of these transgenic mammals can be collected, the modified human insulin precursor can be converted in vitro into recombinant human insulin, and the recombinant human insulin can be purified to homogeneity as a pure biopharmaceutical product. | 2009-07-23 |

20090188003 | Transcriptional Activators Involved in Abiotic Stress Tolerance - The present invention provides compositions and methods for regulating expression of nucleotide sequences in a plant. Compositions comprise novel polypeptides involved in modulating gene expression in response to abiotic stress such as cold or drought, and the polynucleotides encoding the polypeptides. Methods for expressing the polynucleotides in a plant and improving cold and/or drought tolerance of plants are also provided. | 2009-07-23 |
20090188004 | Protein Kinase Stress-Related Proteins and Methods of Use in Plants - A transgenic plant transformed by a Protein Kinase Stress-Related Protein (PKSRP) coding nucleic acid, wherein expression of the nucleic acid sequence in the plant results in increased tolerance to environmental stress as compared to a wild type variety of the plant. Also provided are agricultural products, including seeds, produced by the transgenic plants. Also provided are isolated PKSRPs, and isolated nucleic acid coding PKSRPs, and vectors and host cells containing the latter. | 2009-07-23 |
20090188005 | METHODS FOR GENETIC CONTROL OF PLANT PEST INFESTATION AND COMPOSITIONS THEREOF - The present invention is directed to controlling plant pest infestation, and particularly plant nematode infestation, by inhibiting one or more biological functions in the plant pest. The invention discloses methods and compositions for use in controlling plant pest infestation by providing one or more different recombinant double stranded RNA molecules in the diet of the pest in order to achieve a reduction in pest infestation through suppression of pest gene expression. The invention is also directed to methods for making transgenic plants that express the double stranded RNA molecules, to methods for detecting cells comprising the disclosed sequences, and to methods for detecting the disclosed sequences in biological samples. | 2009-07-23 |
20090188006 | PATHOGEN-INDUCIBLE SYNTHETIC PROMOTER - The invention relates to a pathogen-inducible synthetic promoter which is suitable for regulating the transcription of a nucleic acid, and includes a minimal promoter, characterized in that the minimal promoter includes a sequence motif a) dbrmwa or b) twcccmt which is disposed downstream from a TATA region and in front of a transcription starting point which is located on the minimal promoter and at which transcription of the nucleic acid to be regulated starts. | 2009-07-23 |
20090188007 | PLANTS HAVING TOMATO TORRADO VIRUS RESISTANCE - The present invention relates to a tomato plant having within its genome at least one allele of a gene that confers resistance to Tomato torrado virus (ToTV), said virus having been deposited with the Deutsche Sammlung von Mikroorganismen und Zellkulturen GmbH on 24 Nov. 2004 under depositors reference number ToTV-E01 (DSM 16999). | 2009-07-23 |
20090188008 | COMPOSITIONS AND METHODS FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF TARGET POLYNUCLEOTIDES - Methods and compositions which increase the concentration of an inhibitory RNA specific for a target sequence in a cell are provided. In one embodiment, the methods and compositions employ a first polynucleotide comprising a silencing element for a target pest sequence operably linked to a promoter active in the plant cell; and, a second polynucleotide comprising a suppressor enhancer element comprising the target pest sequence or an active fragment or variant thereof operably linked to a promoter active in the plant cell. The combined expression of the silencing element with the target pest sequence, or an active variant or fragment thereof, leads to the amplification of the inhibitory RNA produced from the silencing element over the achievable with only the expression of the silencing element alone. Thus, the various methods and compositions of the invention provide improved methods for the delivery of inhibitory RNA to a target organism. | 2009-07-23 |
