20100164760CODING SCHEME FOR SERIAL DATA COMMUNICATIONS - An encoding scheme generates an encoded nine bit code word from each input eight bit data word. The coding scheme is such that the encoded data words have advantageous properties, such as a minimum of two polarity transitions in each encoded data word, and a maximum of five bits without a polarity transition. Five of the bits from the input eight bit data word appear unchanged in the encoded data word, while the other four bits of the encoded data word are obtained by applying appropriate logical operators to the remaining three bits of the input data word in combination with two of the five bits that appear unchanged in the encoded data word. Exception codes can also be defined, that is, nine bit code words that cannot be obtained from any eight bit data word by means of the coding scheme, and can be used to embed control information into the data stream. For example, the exception codes may advantageously have six or seven bits without a polarity transition.2010-07-01
20100164761DUAL-USE COMPARATOR/OP AMP FOR USE AS BOTH A SUCCESSIVE-APPROXIMATION ADC AND DAC - A re-configurable circuit acts as an Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and as a digital-to-analog converter (DAC). An array of binary-weighted capacitors stores an analog input. Switches connect different capacitors in the array to fixed voltages that cause charge-sharing with a terminal capacitor. The voltage of the terminal capacitor is compared by a re-configurable comparator stage for each different combination of the capacitors. The comparison results are analyzed to determine the closest digital value for the analog input. In DAC mode, the array capacitors are switched based on an input digital value. The switched capacitors connect to a charge-sharing line to generate an analog voltage that is applied to the re-configurable comparator stage. A differential amplifier generates a buffered analog voltage that is fed back to the other input of the re-configurable comparator stage for unity gain. The gain of the re-configurable comparator stage adjusts for ADC and DAC modes.2010-07-01

20100164763ERROR ESTIMATION AND CORRECTION IN A TWO-CHANNEL TIME-INTERLEAVED ANALOG-TO-DIGITAL CONVERTER - A two-channel time-interleaved analog-to-digital converter (TIADC) system that provides for estimation and correction of offset, gain, and sample-time errors. Error in the offsets of the two ADCs that form the TIADC produces a spurious signal at the Nyquist frequency that can be used to minimize the difference of offsets of the ADCs. The difference in gain between the two ADCs produces spurious signals reflected around the Nyquist frequency whose magnitudes can be reduced by minimizing the difference in signal power between the two ADCs. An Automatic Gain Control loop corrects the scaling of the input signal due to the average of the gains of the ADCs. Phase error produces spurious signals reflected around the Nyquist frequency that are π/2 out of phase with those due to the gain error. Minimizing the difference between the correlation of consecutive signals from the ADCs reduces the magnitude of these image tones.2010-07-01

20100164768PROVIDING DIGITAL CODES REPRESENTING ANALOG SAMPLES WITH ENHANCED ACCURACY WHILE USING AN ADC OF LOWER RESOLUTION - An aspect of the present invention improves accuracy of output codes generated by a lower resolution ADC. In an embodiment, a gain factor is determined by examining a strength of an input signal in analog form. The gain factor equals one if the strength is more than half of the maximum voltage resolvable by the ADC and is more than one otherwise. An analog sample obtained from the input signal is converted to a digital code using the ADC, with the digital code being scaled up by the gain factor compared to an output code representing the strength of the analog sample in relation to the maximum voltage. The digital code is divided by the gain factor to generate the output code representing the strength of the analog sample in relation to the maximum voltage. The accuracy of the output code is greater for smaller amplitudes of the analog samples.2010-07-01

In the selection of the digital reference values successive steps between digital reference values are each selected dependent on values of the comparator result from a plurality of preceding recursion cycles. The comparison results define a series of successively narrower ranges of digital values that contain a digital representation of the analog input signal. Use of a plurality of comparator results for selecting the steps in the digital reference values makes it possible to reduce uncertainty about whether the comparison result has settled. This in turn makes it possible to reduce the sizes of the successive ranges, which speeds up convergence.2010-07-01
