20150090006 | COMBINATION PRESSURE- AND VACUUM-BASED EVAP LEAK DETECTION METHOD - A method and system for conducting leak detection in an evaporative emission control system. The method performs a pressure-based leak test at selected intervals. The pressure-based test includes pressurizing the system, using a pump. Then, the system monitors pressure for a selected period. If system pressure falls below a threshold value during the selected period, the system identifies an initial leak. Upon identifying the initial leak, the system substitutes a vacuum-based leak test at each selected interval. The vacuum-based test includes evacuating the system, using the pump. The system then monitors system pressure for a selected period. If system pressure rises above a threshold value during the selected period, then the system identifies a subsequent leak. Upon receiving notification that the initial leak has been repaired, the system returns to pressure-based leak testing. Where a single pump is used, that pump is configured both for system pressurization and evacuation. | 2015-04-02 |

20150090008 | INFERENTIAL METHOD AND SYSTEM FOR EVAP SYSTEM LEAK DETECTION - A method for detecting leaks in an evaporative emission control system. The method begins by activating a PCM at a selected interval, for a selected period. During the selected period, the PCM monitors system pressure and temperature. The PCM then determines a relationship between changes in system temperature and changes in system pressure, and it identifies a leak based on predetermined criteria related to the relationship. The relationship can be the ideal gas law, which allows the calculation of an expected pressure, based upon differences in temperature. If the actual pressure is considerably below the expected pressure, then one can infer the presence of a leak. | 2015-04-02 |

20150090012 | SYSTEM FOR PRE-TREATING A FILTER USED IN A SMALL-SCALE WATER SEPAROMETER - The safety and proper performance of jet aircraft engines requires that any contamination of jet fuel, for example by water or by improper contaminants, be filtered (removed) before delivery of the fuel, through hoses, to the fuel tanks of the aircraft. Coalescing devices and filters in the fuel delivery system are used to attain this result. A typical problem is that filter materials chemically react with surfactants, and this causes the filter subsequently to “disarm” or fail to perform its function of removing water, which can lead to delivery of fuel containing excessive water. A solution to this problem is to pre-test the fuel for such surfactants by feeding a small fuel sample that has been mixed with “challenge water” through a smaller ‘representative’ test filter and monitor the performance. Using a fluorescent dye in the “challenge water,” the amount of water that passes the test filter is detected, compared with a baseline data and fuel quality determination is made. From the result of the small-scale test, the fuel condition can be inferred and, based thereon; action can be taken to treat the fuel, prior to further distribution, such that it will not disarm field filter-coalescers in a typical fuel distribution system. The use of a fluorescent dye enhances the ability to make this determination of very small representative fuel filters. The fuel evaluation process is fully automated, thereby avoiding human-factor variables and assuring repeatable results. | 2015-04-02 |
