20110055984 | Tip-enhanced resonant apertures - Transmission efficiency and/or spatial resolution provided by resonant apertures can be enhanced by disposing a tip on part of the screen that extends laterally into the aperture. For example, a tip disposed on the ridge of a C-shaped aperture can dramatically improve performance. A spatial resolution of λ/50 has been experimentally demonstrated with this approach. The combination of high spatial resolution and high transmission efficiency provided by this approach enables many applications, such as near field optical probes for near field scanning optical microscopy (NSOM). Another application is high resolution electron sources, where an photoelectron emitter can be disposed at or near a tip+aperture structure such that the high resolution optical near-field provides a correspondingly high resolution electron source. | 2011-03-03 |
20110055985 | DEVICE AND METHOD FOR AN ATOMIC FORCE MICROSCOPE FOR THE STUDY AND MODIFICATION OF SURFACE PROPERTIES - The invention relates to a device for an atomic force microscope (AFM) for the study and/or modification of surface properties. The device comprises a cantilever (flexible bar) having an integrated, piezoresistive sensor, an integrated bimorphic actuator, and a measuring tip. The measuring tip carries at least two metal electrodes, which can be activated via electrical terminals. The measuring tip and/or the cantilever have at least one nanoscopic hole through which synchrotron radiation or laser light is directed onto the material surface to be studied. Furthermore, the invention relates to a method for the study and modification of surface properties and surface-proximal properties, which can be executed using such a device. To this end, atomic force microscopy (AFM), surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), photo emission spectroscopy (XPS, XAS), and material modification by local exposure are executed in sequence or simultaneously using the same device. | 2011-03-03 |
20110055986 | Athermal Atomic Force Microscope Probes - An atomic force microscopy system includes an imaging probe having a first thermal displacement constant and a sample placement surface. At least a portion of the sample placement surface has a second thermal displacement constant. The sample placement surface is spaced apart from the imaging probe at a predetermined displacement. The sample placement surface is configured so that the second thermal displacement constant matches the first thermal displacement constant so that when the imaging probe and the sample placement surface are subject to a predetermined temperature, both the portion of the sample placement surface and the imaging prove are displaced by a same distance. | 2011-03-03 |
20110055987 | METHOD TO REDUCE WEDGE EFFECTS IN MOLDED TRIGONAL TIPS - A method of producing sharp tips useful for scanning probe microscopy and related applications is described. The tips are formed by deposition into a mold(s) formed in a sacrificial crystalline semiconductor substrate with an exposed {311} surface which has been etched with a crystallographic etchant to form a 3-sided, trihedral or trigonal pyramidal mold(s) or indentation(s). The resultant tips, when released from the sacrificial mold material or substrate, are typically formed in the shape of a trigonal pyramid or a tetrahedron. Another embodiment involves starting with a {100} surface and the formation of two tips on opposite ends of a wedge at trigonal or trihedral points of the wedge. These tips are less susceptible to the tip wedge effect typical of tips formed using known methods. | 2011-03-03 |
20110055988 | Mandarin tree named 'Queen' - ‘Queen’ is a new and distinctive mandarin hybrid cultivar, which distinguishes itself by having mid to late season maturity, a large size, distinguished flat shape, easily peeled, a smooth rind texture, white albedo, red color, rich sweet flavor and pleasant aroma. It further distinguishes itself by being seedless or virtually seedless. | 2011-03-03 |
