20090010714LNG RECEIVING TERMINAL THAT PRIMARILY USES COMPENSATED SALT CAVERN STORAGE AND METHOD OF USE - In the past, “compensated” salt caverns have operated with a compensating liquid, such as brine to displace a stored liquid, such as crude oil, when the stored liquid is needed on the surface. Virtually all of the stored liquid in a compensated salt cavern can be expelled from the salt cavern when it is filled with the compensating liquid. In the past, “uncompensated” salt caverns have been used to store gases, such as natural gas. Uncompensated caverns operate without any compensating liquid; instead they rely on pressure. Some of the stored gas (cushion gas) must always be left in an uncompensated salt cavern. This invention breaks with convention and uses a compensating liquid in a salt cavern to store gases which is a technique believed to be previously unknown. “Cushion gas” is not required because the compensating liquid displaces virtually all of the gas in the salt cavern.01-08-2009

20140161533METHODS FOR STORING HYDROGEN IN A SALT CAVERN WITH A PERMEATION BARRIER - A novel method and system for storing high purity hydrogen into a salt cavern is provided. Particularly, the storage process involves storing high purity hydrogen into a salt cavern without seepage or leakage of the stored hydrogen through the salt cavern walls, by creating a substantially impermeable permeation barrier along the salt cavern walls. The cavern pressure is monitored and controlled to ensure formation and maintenance of the substantially impermeable permeation barrier. Optional temperature treatments may also be incorporated as desired.06-12-2014
20160016210SUBSIDENCE CONTROL SYSTEM - A method of maintaining structural integrity of a subsiding earthen fluid containment structure is disclosed and comprises forming a lined containment infrastructure including a convex bulged crown portion, floor portion and sidewall portions which enclose a municipal waste material within an enclosed volume such that fluid flow from the lined containment compound is restricted. The bulged crown flattens, thickens and diminishes in surface area during subsidence of the municipal waste material as fluid is removed. The bulged crown is shaped to avoid tensile stresses which may otherwise result in breach or failure of lined containment during subsidence. Further, the lined containment structure can include an inner insulative layer and an outer impermeable seal layer having unique contributions as described in more detail herein.01-21-2016
20160046443SYSTEM FOR OPERATING A HYDROGEN STORAGE SALT CAVERN - A novel system for operating a hydrogen storage cavern is provided. Particularly, the system involves storing high purity hydrogen into a salt cavern without seepage or leakage of the stored hydrogen through the salt cavern walls, by confining the high purity hydrogen gas within the storage cavern under certain pressure conditions.02-18-2016
20160060038SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR TREATING HYDROGEN TO BE STORED IN A SALT CAVERN AND SUPPLYING THEREFROM - A novel system and method for storing hydrogen in a salt cavern and supplying therefrom is provided. Hydrogen product withdrawn from a hydrogen pipeline may be chilled prior to being introduced into a cavern in order to cool at least a portion of the walls of the salt cavern so that one or more layers of the localized portion of the walls attains a stabilized state whereby contaminant release from the walls is suppressed. The present invention anticipates and strategically plans for contaminant intrusion form a salt cavern in order to reduce the degree of contaminant intrusion from a salt cavern while also allowing the stored hydrogen to have more absorption capacity for water vapor by virtue of entering the salt cavern in a sufficiently drier state. Alternatively, or in addition thereto, a crude hydrogen stream may be withdrawn from the cavern and chilled prior to introducing to the hydrogen pipeline.03-03-2016

20100098492Engineered, Scalable Underground Storage System and Method - An engineered, scalable underground containment system and method for storing compressed gases or liquids in permeable rock formations using conventional drilling techniques. The porosity and permeability of the formation may be enhanced to maximize reservoir capacity and increase the rate at which gases and liquids can be introduced into and removed from the reservoir. In some embodiments, layers of cap rock in the formation are utilized as containment barriers, and in some, containment barriers are constructed around the storage zones.04-22-2010
20110305516Hydraulically impervious earthen pond - A hydraulically impervious earth excavated pond and method of forming the pond. The pond includes a shaped man-made excavated pond basin having sides and a base. An impermeable hardened foam sealant supporting damaging inhibitors is secured to the sides of the pond basin. The inhibitor is a root inhibitor and/or rodent inhibitor/repellant. A resilient liquid impermeable membrane covers the sealant and base of the pond basin.12-15-2011
20160089705SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR PURGING CONTAMINANTS FROM A SALT CAVERN - A novel system and method for removing contaminants in a salt cavern is provided. A purge fluid is used to purge one or more contaminants from the cavern on a continuous or intermittent basis before or during operation of the cavern. The cavern can be cycled one or more times with purging operations to create a cleaner cavern less susceptible to contaminating stored hydrogen during the operational lifetime of the cavern.03-31-2016
