20090274027STORAGE DEVICE AND ITS DRIVE STARTUP METHOD - The time required for starting up drives in a storage device mounted with both hard disk drives and solid state drives is shortened. A storage controller of the storage device identifies the type (HDD/SSD) of the mounted drives before starting up the drives. The storage controller thereafter performs staggered spinup to the HDDs in several batches. After the startup of HDDs is complete, the storage controller collectively starts up the SSDs. The storage controller determines the drive startup processing based on a pre-set drive startup policy such as reduction of the peak current reduction or shortening of the startup time, and the drive type identification result.11-05-2009

20120057444Information Processing Apparatus and Operation Control Method of an Information Processing Apparatus - According to one embodiment, an information processing apparatus includes an optical disc drive, a data processing module which executes data processing using the optical disc drive, and a power supply management module which manages supply of power to the optical disc drive. The data processing module interrogates the power supply management module about the optical disc drive at the time of activation, and waits until an operating system recognizes the optical disc drive when an instruction is received from the power supply management module in response to an interrogation. The instruction instructs to wait until the operating system recognizes the optical disc drive. The power supply management module shifts the optical disc drive to a power supply on state and returns the instruction to the data processing module, if the optical disc drive is in a power supply off state when the interrogation is received.03-08-2012

20080253246METHOD FOR CONTROLLING BALL AUTO-BALANCE SYSTEM OF OPTICAL DISK DRIVE - A method for controlling a ball auto-balancing system of an optical disk drive is provided. A rotational member is fixed on a rotating axis of an optical disk drive and rotates synchronously therewith. A spindle motor drives the rotational member to accelerate and decelerate within the rotating speed range at least twice. When the spindle motor accelerates and decelerates for many times, if the measured central error value is greater than the last measured one, the accelerating and decelerating range is adjusted.10-16-2008
20080279064Optical Data Storage System and Method of Optical Recording and/or Reading - An optical data storage system for recording and/or reading, using a radiation beam having a wavelength X is described. The radiation beam is focused onto a data storage layer of an optical data storage medium. The medium has a cover layer that is transparent to the focused radiation beam. The cover layer has a thickness h smaller than 5 μm. A cover layer with thickness variation of substantially less than the focal depth, i.e. 50 nm, eliminates the need of dynamic focus control of the objective which is otherwise required in addition to the gap servo. Further a method of optical recording is described using such an optical data storage system by which a static focus control and spherical aberration correction to accommodate medium-to-medium variance is achieved. The static focus control can be realised by optimising the modulation depth of a known signal, e.g. from a lead-in track.11-13-2008
