20080264628Restrictor Valve Mounting for Downhole Screens - In one aspect of the invention a valve that operates in association with a downhole screen is threaded into the wall of a base pipe after being inserted through a saddle. When the valve body is threaded in, the engagement into the wall threads in the base pipe acts as a sealing force on a ring seal between the saddle and the base pipe and between the valve body and the saddle. The valve itself can be outfitted with a cover with openings that can be integral or removable and disposed at the end of the valve that is innermost to the base pipe. Preferably a series of elongated slots are used that can catch slurry if the well is to be killed while allowing subsequent production to drive the accumulated solids from well killing back into the base pipe. Another feature places the valve in a base pipe opening under a cylindrical screen section to reduce assembly time and cost of constructing an adjacent housing to one side of the cylindrical screen section to accommodate the valve.10-30-2008

20110168387Resilient Foam Debris Barrier - A space filler material is used to prevent accumulation of debris that could later foul the operation of adjacent moving parts. In one application a void space that is subsequently closed by actuated parts is initially filled with a material that is highly compressible and has voids that allow it to compress without undue resistance to part movement when the void volume is reduced. Ideally, the pores or voids in the material itself are small enough to keep most if not all the debris from entering and making the space filling material too rigid to collapse under part movement. In an alternative application, the material can be in an annular space such as a seal bore and it can keep debris from getting past the seal bore while allowing hydrostatic pressure across itself thereby helping it to maintain its position until moved such as by shifting of an inner string to which it is attached.07-14-2011

20100224359Subterranean Screen with Varying Resistance to Flow - A screen section is made with variable resistance to flow in the screen material to balance the flow along the screen length. In one variation different discrete zones have screens configured for different percentages of open area while all have the same particle filtration capability. In another variation discrete portions have differing amounts of overlapping screen portions so as to balance flow without affecting the particle size screened. The cross-sectional shape of a wire wrap underlayment for the screen is made closer to trapezoidal to decrease the angle of opening for the incoming flow paths toward the base pipe. In this manner flow resistance is reduced and flow is increased due to reduced turbulence.09-09-2010
20140360718SAND FILTER AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURE - Cylindrical screens and screen assemblies for use with perforated base pipe or casing for sand control in wellbores have generally longitudinally extending slots punched in the screen. The outer surface of the screen material is deformed below the inner surface causing apertures to form along the longitudinal edges of the slot. The slots are generally longitudinally aligned with the longitudinal axis of the cylindrical screens whether butt-welded or spiral-rolled and welded by determining the angle at which the slots need to be punched to result in such alignment. End caps which connect between the screen and the casing extend over the ends of the cylindrical screen and are welded thereto to minimize sand entry. At least one of the end caps may include an expansion joint to permit relative expansion and contraction between the screen and the casing particularly when used in thermal recovery operations.12-11-2014
20150144328Downhole Gas and Solids Separator - The disclosed downhole gas and solids separator includes a suspended helical flighting member for efficient downhole separation of both gases and solids from a hydrocarbon production stream. Centrifugal force, provided by the flighting member, accelerates the coalescence of like materials to enhance separation of both gases and solids within the separator. Centrifugal force urges solids to the outer wall of the separator and gases toward the center, where passageways are designed to allow solids to efficiently migrate toward and accumulate at the bottom of the separator while simultaneously allowing gases to efficiently rise out of the separator device.05-28-2015

20090008085MANUFACTURING OF SAND SCREENS - A rod-based well screen is formed in place on a perforated pipe base by wrapping wire around the pipe base and a plurality of rods located around the outside of the pipe. The wire is welded sequentially to each individual rod as it is wrapped around the pipe. The welding and ground electrodes engage the wire and the rods respectively. The rod engaging ground electrode is positioned a short distance ahead of the wire being wrapped around the rods and the pipe base. The ground electrode includes a plurality of contacts. Each contact is mounted to pivot toward and away from a rod. Springs urge each contact toward a rod to hold the rod against the outside surface of the pipe base and to maintain good electrical contact between the contact and the rod. Each contact has a groove to guide the rod into position for welding to the wire.01-08-2009
20100243239Compaction Tolerant Basepipe for Hydrocarbon Production - The invention relates to base pipe with slots cut into the peripheral wall to form compaction absorber segments that are arranged to permit the base pipe to be compacted in length without buckling or transferring excessive compressive forces to other pipe sections when a poorly consolidated formation shrinks due to production from the formation. Over time, the slots close as the base pipe shrinks in length and production continues through conventional holes in the base pipe.09-30-2010
20120037357Crimped End Wrapped on Pipe Well Screen - A well screen is constructed by positioning a crimp ring encircling and over an end of a wrapped-on-pipe screen layer on a tubular base pipe. The crimp ring is plastically deformed about an outer surface of the screen layer. A bead of weld is applied to affix the crimp ring to the base pipe.02-16-2012
20130000890Multiple Sectioned Wire-Wrapped Screens - Operators manufacture a wellscreen by forming a wire-wrapped screen on a base pipe. Rather than stopping and restarting winding, the desired length of screen is completed along the base pipe, and then the wire screen is segmented into a plurality of screen sections as required for the various zones and details of the implementation. Operators arrange the screen sections relative to one another on the base pipe, which can have different lengths with and without perforations. On the free ends of these separate screen sections, mating split ring components fit around the free ends and the base pipes. Male edges of one split ring component mate to complementary female edges of another to form the end ring around the screen section and base pipe, and longitudinal welds made in seams along the mating edges affix the split ring components together.01-03-2013

20130206394Downhole Screen with Exterior Shunts and Manifolded Shunt Connections at Tubular Joints - An assembly of screens made of connected joints with exterior shunts that span the threaded connections among the joints features manifolds for the shunts adjacent joint threaded ends that are connected with a coupling. A mandrel spans from one joint to the next inside the threaded coupling and is sealed to the respective bases pipes on opposed ends of the coupling. At each end of the mandrel the surrounding base pipe has openings from the manifold where the shunts terminate to define an annular flow path between pairs of manifolds. The shunts can have slanted gravel outlet passages or no gravel openings at all. The shunts can span over screen or blank pipe with an option to mount a shroud over the generally parallel shunts.08-15-2013
20140318765Mechanically Locked Debris Barrier - A debris barrier is installed and locked to the liner tieback extension. When it is time to check release from the liner before initiating a cement job the inner running string is lifted. The lock stays engaged to the liner tieback extension tube as the inner running string is lifted. In that manner the debris barrier remains in position during the lifting to determine release from the liner before cementing. After cementing, the inner running string is lifted further to eventually undermine the lock and capture the debris barrier to bring the debris barrier to the surface with the inner running string. The lock can be dogs or collets or the like. An inner sleeve or a lift sub with an upset can be the support whose axial movement beyond a predetermined value undermines the lock to release the debris barrier.10-30-2014
