|NANOPARTICLE-STABILIZED IMMISCIBLE ALLOYS - Solid immiscible alloys and methods for making the solid immiscible alloys are provided. The microstructure of the immiscible alloys is characterized by a minority phase comprising a plurality of particles of an inorganic material dispersed in a majority phase comprising a continuous matrix of another inorganic material. The methods utilize nanoparticles to control both the collisional growth and the diffusional growth of the minority phase particles in the matrix during the formation of the alloy microstructure.
|p-Coumaroyl-CoA:Monolignol Transferase - The invention relates to nucleic acids encoding a p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase and to inhibitory nucleic acids adapted to inhibit the expression and/or translation of a p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase RNA. Inhibition of p-coumaroyl-CoA:monolignol transferase in plants improves the incorporation of monolignol ferulates into the lignin of plants, giving rise to plant biomass that is more easily processed into useful products such as paper and biofuels.

|SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR ENHANCED KNOWLEDGE CONSOLIDATION BY SLEEP SLOW WAVE INDUCTION AND SENSORY CONTEXT RE-CREATION - The present disclosure pertains to a system for enhancing knowledge consolidation in a subject during sleep. New declarative memories may be better consolidated by presenting sensory stimuli during slow wave sleep that correspond to sensory stimuli presented during prior wakeful learning. The sensory stimuli may include odors, sounds, visual stimulation, touches, tastes, and/or other types of sensory stimuli. The system is configured to provide a prompt sensory stimulus during slow wave sleep that corresponds to a wakeful stimulus provided during wakeful learning. The prompt sensory stimulus may prompt enhanced knowledge consolidation in the subject. In some embodiments, the system may comprise one or more of a slow wave sleep inducer, a sensory stimulator, a sensor, a processor, electronic storage, a user interface, and/or other components.
|VARIABLE MAGNETIC FLUX-TYPE ROTARY ELECTRIC MACHINE - A variable magnetic flux-type rotary electric machine includes a stator and a rotor. The stator includes a stator coil wound on teeth. The rotor defines an air gap between the rotor and the stator. The rotor has at least one permanent magnet arranged in the d-axis magnetic path. The stator and the rotor are arranged relative to the permanent magnet to set a characteristic of d(Kt(I))/dI≧0 in a range of at or below magnetic saturation of a core material of at least one of the stator and the rotor, where KT represents a torque constant, and I represents an applied current, and a function of KT with respect to I is represented by KT=Kt(I) for a torque Tr acting on the rotor that is represented by Tr=KT×I.
|High Mass Accuracy Filtering for Improved Spectral Matching of High-Resolution Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry Data Against Unit-Resolution Reference Databases - The invention provides methods, systems and algorithms for identifying high-resolution mass spectra. In some embodiments, an analyte is ionized and analyzed using high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS) at high mass accuracy (such as ≦75 ppm or ≦30 ppm) and the obtained mass spectra are matched with one or more prospective candidate molecules or chemical formulas. The invention provide, for example, methods and systems wherein the possible fragments that can be generated from the candidate molecules or chemical formulas are determined as well as the masses of each of these fragments. The invention provide, for example, methods and systems wherein the high-resolution mass spectra are then compared with the calculated fragment masses for each of the candidate molecules or chemical formula, and the portion of the high-resolution mass spectra that corresponds or can be explained by the calculated fragment masses is determined.
|Method and Apparatus for Rapid Acquisition of Elasticity Data in Three Dimensions - Interpolation of ultrasound data at regular grid locations is provided by simultaneously optimizing interpolated data according to fidelity of interpolation of the voxel data to actual measured spatial data and according to a gradient of the interpolated data. This process is made amenable to real-time processing by limiting the range of interpolation to produce a sparse interpolated matrix that may be readily inverted. Artifacts and inefficiencies from successive stages of interpolation and data smoothing are thereby avoided.
|COMPUTER ARCHITECTURE HAVING SELECTABLE, PARALLEL AND SERIAL COMMUNICATION CHANNELS BETWEEN PROCESSORS AND MEMORY - A computer architecture provides both a parallel memory bus and serial memory bus between a processor system and memory. Latency-tolerant memory access requests are steered to the serial memory bus which operates to increase the available memory bus bandwidth on the parallel memory. The invention also provides integrated circuit computer memory suitable for this application.
|METHOD TO PRODUCE WATER-SOLUBLE SUGARS FROM BIOMASS USING SOLVENTS CONTAINING LACTONES - A process to produce an aqueous solution of carbohydrates that contains C6-sugar-containing oligomers, C6 sugar monomers, C5-sugar-containing oligomers, C5 sugar monomers, or any combination thereof is presented. The process includes the steps of reacting biomass or a biomass-derived reactant with a solvent system including a lactone and water, and an acid catalyst. The reaction yields a product mixture containing water-soluble C6-sugar-containing oligomers, C6-sugar monomers, C5-sugar-containing oligomers, C5-sugar monomers, or any combination thereof. A solute is added to the product mixture to cause partitioning of the product mixture into an aqueous layer containing the carbohydrates and a substantially immiscible organic layer containing the lactone.
|CT Machine for Multi-Angle Scanning of Stationary Patients - A CT machine for scanning a stationary patient may provide for two-bar linkage articulated arms to move a CT gantry in an arbitrary trajectory. In one embodiment, the gantry may fit within a cavity to expose a central platform, which may support a patient for vertical scans in which the gantry housing rises from the cavity after the patient is so positioned.
|ANTIMICROBIAL FERULIC ACID DERIVATIVES AND USES THEREOF - Antimicrobial diferulates, compositions containing same, and uses of same for inhibiting growth of microorganisms. The antimicrobial diferulates can be used alone or in combination with other antimicrobial agents to inhibit growth of microorganisms such as fungi, oomycetes, and other microorganisms having a glucan-containing cell wall. The antimicrobial diferulates can be included in pharmaceutical compositions for treatment of animals or included in agricultural compositions for treatment of plants, crops, and soils.

|DATABASE SYSTEM WITH HIGHLY DENORMALIZED DATABASE STRUCTURE - A database system converts a multi-table relational database into a wide table incorporating all of the information of the relational database tables and converts queries for the relational database system into a form applicable to the wide table. Dictionary compression and/or columnar store allow faster query processing despite a substantially larger size of the wide table.
|SULFITE PRETREATMENT FOR BIOREFINING BIOMASS - The present invention relates to a method using sulfite pretreatment to overcome recalcitrance of lignocellulose (SPORL). |METHOD FOR SELECTIVE TARGETING AND ENTRY OF BACTERIAL TOXINS TO CELLS - The present invention provides methods and reagents for directing the selective targeting and entry of bacterial toxins to mammalian cells. Methods include the step of contacting a cell with a bacterial toxin or toxic bioactive fragment thereof associated with an antibody or ligand that is specific to a target on the cell, wherein the antibody or ligand selectively binds the target on the cell and the bacterial toxin or fragment thereof is internalized and enters the cell. The invention further encompasses compositions and kits to carry out the methods.
|METHOD FOR SELECTIVELY PREPARING 5-HYDROXYMETHYLFURFUAL (HMF) FROM BIOMASS IN POLAR APROTIC SOLVENTS - A method to produce 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is described in which a reactant including cellulose, lignocellulose, or a combination thereof, in a reaction mixture of a polar, aprotic solvent and an acid is reacted for a time, at a temperature, and at a hydrogen ion concentration wherein at least a portion of the cellulose or lignocellulose present in the reactant is converted to HMF. The reaction mixture is initially substantially devoid of water. As the reaction proceeds, dehydration of intermediates causes the water concentration in the reaction mixture to rise to no more than about 0.2 wt % water.
|METHOD OF ESTIMATING PROGRAM SPEED-UP WITH HIGHLY PARALLEL ARCHITECTURES - The amount of speed-up that can be obtained by moving a program to a parallel architecture is determined by a model associating speed-up to micro-architecture independent features of the program execution. The model may be generated, for example, by linear regression, by evaluating programs that have been ported to parallel architectures where the micro-architecture independent features are known.
|COMPUTER ACCELERATOR SYSTEM WITH IMPROVED EFFICIENCY - A specialized memory access processor is placed between a main processor and accelerator hardware to handle memory access for the accelerator hardware. The architecture of the memory access processor is designed to allow lower energy memory accesses than can be obtained by the main processor in providing data to the hardware accelerator while providing the hardware accelerator with a sufficiently high bandwidth memory channel. In some embodiments, the main processor may enter a sleep state during accelerator calculations to substantially lower energy consumption.
|SELECTIVE C-O BOND CLEAVAGE OF OXIDIZED LIGNIN AND LIGNIN-TYPE MATERIALS INTO SIMPLE AROMATIC COMPOUNDS - A method to cleave C—C and C—O bonds in β-O-4 linkages in lignin or lignin sub-units is described. The method includes oxidizing at least a portion of secondary benzylic alcohol groups in β-O-4 linkages in the lignin or lignin sub-unit to corresponding ketones and then leaving C—O or C—C bonds in the oxidized lignin or lignin sub-unit by reacting it with an organic carboxylic acid, a salt of an organic carboxylic acids, and/or an ester of an organic carboxylic acids. The method may utilize a metal or metal-containing reagent or proceed without the metal or metal-containing reagent.
|EPSILON NEGATIVE LOADED TRAVELING WAVE TUBE - A slow wave structure of a traveling wave tube is provided. The slow wave structure includes an input port, an output port, a first material, and a second material. The second material is mounted in the first material at periodic intervals in a direction of propagation of a radio frequency signal between the input port and the output port. The second material has a real part of permittivity that is negative and a real part of permeability that is positive at an operational frequency of the radio frequency signal.
|INTEGRATED CAPACITOR AND INDUCTOR HAVING CO-LOCATED MAGNETIC AND ELECTRICAL ENERGY STORAGE VOLUMES - A combination capacitor and inductor employ a common volume for energy storing electrical and magnetic fields thereby reducing the bulk of these components with respect to separate components of comparable value.
|MICROWAVE ABLATION ANTENNA SYSTEM - An antenna system is provided. The antenna system includes a coaxial cable, an antenna, and an impedance matching structure. The coaxial cable includes a center conductor extending a length of the coaxial cable, a dielectric material surrounding the center conductor along the length of the coaxial cable, and a conductive shield surrounding the dielectric material along the length of the coaxial cable. The antenna includes a conductor having an electrical length of half a wavelength at a selected operating frequency. The impedance matching structure includes a second center conductor mounted between an end of the center conductor of the coaxial cable and a feed end of the antenna. The impedance matching structure is configured to match an impedance of the coaxial cable to an impedance of the antenna.
|SERIES CONNECTED DC INPUT INVERTERS - A multi-level converter includes a first multi-phase inverter and a second multi-phase inverter. The first multi-phase inverter includes a first direct current (DC) positive line, a first DC negative line, and a first plurality of alternating current (AC) lines. Each AC line of the first plurality of AC lines is configured to be connected to a single phase winding of an electric machine. Each single phase winding is connected to a common neutral connector in a Y-winding configuration or between a pair of single phase windings in a Δ-winding configuration. The second multi-phase inverter includes a second DC positive line, a second DC negative line, and a second plurality of AC lines and is connected in a similar manner to the first multi-phase inverter. The first DC negative line is electrically coupled to the second DC positive line to connect the first multi-phase inverter and the second multi-phase inverter in series.
|Method and Apparatus for Soft Error Mitigation in Computers - Hardening of an integrated circuit such as a GPU processor to soft errors caused by particle strikes is applied selectively to the set of devices according to the magnitude of error resulting from this soft error for the particular device. This approach differs from approaches that protect all devices, all devices likely to produce an output error, or all devices that are vulnerable.
|FREE-SPACE LASER TUNING OF OPTICAL MICROCAVITIES - Methods and apparatuses for resonance tuning of microcavities are provided. An apparatus comprises a whispering gallery mode optical microcavity characterized by at least one resonance frequency; optical components configured to evanescently couple a probe laser beam into the microcavity; an absorber element in thermal contact with the microcavity; and optical components configured to illuminate the absorber element with a free space pump light beam, wherein the absorber element is configured to absorb energy from the free space pump light beam, thereby generating heat, and to transfer the heat to the microcavity, thereby inducing a shift in the at least one resonance frequency. The absorber element may be configured as a pillar forming an interfacial region with the microcavity at one of the ends of the pillar. The surface of the microcavity may be substantially free of a coating material.
|NYLON-3 CO-POLYMERS AND SYNTHETIC LUNG SURFACTANT COMPOSITIONS CONTAINING SAME - Non-natural oligomers have recently shown promise as functional analogues of lung surfactant proteins B and C (SP-B and SP-C), two helical and amphiphilic proteins that are critical for normal respiration. The generation of non-natural mimics of SP-B and SP-C has previously been restricted to step-by-step, sequence-specific synthesis, which results in discrete oligomers that are intended to manifest specific structural attributes. Presented herein an alternative approach to SP-B mimicry that is based on sequence-random copolymers containing cationic and lipophilic subunits. These materials, members of the nylon-3 family, are prepared by ring-opening polymerization of β-lactams. The best of the nylon-3 polymers display promising in vitro surfactant activities in a mixed lipid film. Pulsating bubble surfactometry data indicate that films containing the most surface-active polymers attain adsorptive and dynamic-cycling properties that surpass those of discrete peptides intended to mimic SP-B. Attachment of an N-terminal octadecanoyl unit to the nylon-3 copolymers affords further improvements by reducing the percent surface area compression to reach low minimum surface tension.
|DOSE-CONTROLLED, FLOATING EVAPORATIVE ASSEMBLY OF ALIGNED CARBON NANOTUBES FOR USE IN HIGH PERFORMANCE FIELD EFFECT TRANSISTORS - High density films of semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes having a high degree of nanotube alignment are provided. Also provided are methods of making the films and field effect transistors (FETs) that incorporate the films as conducting channel materials. The single-walled carbon nanotubes are deposited from a thin layer of organic solvent containing solubilized single-walled carbon nanotubes that is spread over the surface of an aqueous medium, inducing evaporative self-assembly upon contacting a solid substrate.

|Compact Optical Spectrometer - A spectrometer employs multiple filters having complex filter spectra that can be generated robustly from received light over short optical path lengths. The complex filter spectra provide data that can be converted to a spectrum of the received light using compressed sensing techniques. The result is a more compact, easily manufactured spectrometer.
|SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR FULLY PHASE-ENCODED MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING USING MULTIBAND RADIO FREQUENCY EXCITATION - Systems and methods for simultaneously acquiring three-dimensional data from multiple different frequency bins with a magnetic resonance imaging (“MRI”) system, and without frequency-encoding gradients, are provided. A multiband radio frequency (“RF”) pulse is used to excite spins associated with multiple different resonance frequency offsets, and a fully phase-encoded acquisition is used to acquire data, which may be spectrally-resolved data, from magnetic resonance signals formed in response to the multiband RF pulse.
|Device And Method For Transferring A Target Between Locations - A device and method are proved for transferring a target from a first location to a second location. The target is bound to solid phase substrate to form a target bound solid phase substrate. The device includes transfer surface for receiving the target bound solid phase substrate thereon for transfer. The transfer surface movable between a first position wherein the transfer surface is aligned with the first location and spaced therefrom by a distance and a second position wherein the transfer surface is aligned with the second location. An alignment structure aligns the transfer surface with respect to the second location, with the transfer surface in the second position. |Electronic Computer Providing Power/Performance Management - Computational resources of an electronic computer are monitored by predictors that establish predicted trade-offs between performance and power for a particular workload while the workload is being executed. A coordinator combines prediction values to identify a limited number of combinations of operating states of the computational resources, allowing operating states of the computational resources to be readily adapted during program execution based on a particular workload. The limited number of combinations of operating states are ideally Pareto optimal combinations.
|Fresnel Zone Plate - A Fresnel zone plate is provided for encountering incident light having a wavelength. The Fresnel zone plate has a focal length and a wafer including alternating transparent and opaque zones, and a mounting surface. A plurality of silicon nanowires extend into opaque zone of the wafer. A mechanically stretchable turning structure is mounted to the mounting surface such that stretching of the tuning structure varies the focal length of the Fresnel zone plate.
|Encrypted Digital Circuit Description Allowing Circuit Simulation - A system for creating protected functional descriptions of integrated circuits provides an encrypted functional description that allows the integrated circuit to be simulated with respect to producing outputs for given sets of inputs without identification of the constituent components of the integrated circuit such as the logical gates making up the integrated circuit. The encrypted functional description may include encrypted truth-tables describing the generic gates of the integrated circuit, the encrypted truth-tables securing the function of each logical gate by including multiple redundant table entries mapped to alias values of Boolean logical states and erroneous table entries.

Tetrahydrofuran is a preferred furan species for use in the solvent system.

These polypeptides are all insensitive to effector based feedback inhibition. Polypeptides with these activities and lacking feedback inhibition by the product were not previously identified and characterized from plants. The polypeptides may be used to generate constructs and transgenic cells or plants. For example, a susceptibility distribution in the subject being imaged is estimated from images reconstructed from single-echo or multi-echo k-space data and used to initialize the magnetic field inhomogeneity estimation. This approach can be applied to any complex-based chemical shift encoded chemical species separation technique and to other imaging applications, such as susceptibility-weighted imaging and quantitative susceptibility mapping. The field map can also be used to correct for image distortions and to generate magnetic field shimming values.
|BUFFERED COBALT OXIDE CATALYSTS - Disclosed are electrolysis catalysts formed from cobalt, oxygen and buffering electrolytes (e.g. fluoride). |Dynamic Error Handling For On-Chip Memory Structures - A memory structure is provided that controls the activation of error handling bits as a function of operating voltage. In this way, error correction can be used to offset errors when the memory structure is run at low voltage (and frequency). However, negative performance impacts for such error correction, such as additional access latencies, can be avoided when the memory structure is run at higher voltage (and frequency) and memory errors are less likely. In addition, increased latencies due to evaluating error handling bits may be hidden by reading digital data bits from the memory structures speculatively and assuming no errors. Also, certain portions of memory structures may have larger cells, and therefore larger areas, than other portions, which may provide not only higher reliability at low operating voltages, but also faster operation with reduced latency.

|SYSTEMS AND METHODS FOR GENERATING X-RAY PHASE CONTRAST IMAGES USING A CONVENTIONAL X-RAY IMAGING SYSTEM - Described here are systems and methods for generating x-ray phase contrast images from conventional x-ray attenuation data. X-ray attenuation coefficients generated over a range of x-ray energies are used to compute the x-ray phase signal up to a calibration constant. This calibration constant is computed from provided calibration data, which may be obtained using a dedicated x-ray differential phase contrast imaging system to measure the decrement of the refractive index of a calibration phantom.

The confidence map depicts regions in the field-of-view that are affected by error sources. A parametric map is produced using the reconstructed series of images and the produced confidence map. Values in the parametric map associated with regions in the field-of-view depicted in the confidence map as being affected by error sources are not computed, thereby reducing errors in the parametric map.

Hydrolysis product is useful as feedstock for fermentations including fermentation processes for ethanol, butanol and other fuels.

The reaction takes place in the presence of an acid catalyst and a dehydration catalyst for a time and under conditions such that at least a portion of glucose or fructose present in the reactant is converted to HMF.
