DETAILED DESCRIPTION

[0019] Plug fan assemblies may be utilized in a variety of devices, such as, for example, air conditioning systems including heat pumps and/or rooftop systems; air moving systems; dehumidifiers; etc. A plug fan assembly may be removably coupled to portion of a device, such as a heat exchanger of an air conditioning system. For example, the plug fan assembly may be installed (e.g., coupled) to a component of a device and may be removed from the device (e.g., uninstalled by uncoupling the plug fan) to service the plug fan assembly (e.g., repair, monitor, inspect, and/or replace). Allowing a plug fan assembly to be removably coupled to a portion of a device may facilitate installation, repair, and/or replacement.

[0020] The plug fan assembly may allow air to be drawn into the plug fan housing via an air inlet and expelled through an air outlet. The air outlet may be coupled to an air inlet of at least a portion of a device, such as an air inlet of a heat exchanger. For example, the air may remove heat from refrigerant in the heat exchanger and/or provide heat to refrigerant in the heat exchanger.

[0021] The plug fan assembly may include a plug fan housing and a blower wheel. FIGS. 1-6 illustrate views of an implementation of an example plug fan assembly 100. FIG. 1 illustrates a top view of an implementation of an example plug fan assembly 100. FIG. 2 illustrates a bottom view of an implementation of the example plug fan assembly 100 illustrated in FIG. 1. FIG. 3 illustrates a side view of an implementation of the example plug fan assembly 100 illustrated in FIG. 1. FIG. 4 illustrates a side view of an implementation of the example plug fan assembly 100 illustrated in FIG. 1. FIG. 5 illustrates a cross-sectional view of a side of an implementation of the example plug fan assembly 100 illustrated in FIG. 1. FIG. 6 illustrates a cross-sectional view of a side of an implementation of the example plug fan assembly 100 illustrated in FIG. 1.

[0022] As illustrated, a plug fan assembly 100 may include a plug fan housing 105 and a blower wheel 110. The blower wheel 110 may be disposed at least partially in the plug fan housing 105. The blower wheel 110 may be coupled to at least a portion of the plug fan assembly (e.g., via an opening in the plug fan housing). The blower wheel may be any appropriate blower wheel, such as a 5 blade blower wheel and/or a 7 blade blower wheel. The blower wheel may include a centrifugal blower wheel.

[0023] The plug fan housing 105 and/or the blower wheel 110 may include any appropriate material such as a plastic and/or metal.

[0024] The plug fan housing 105 may include a first side 115, a second side 120, a third side 125, a fourth side 130, a fifth side 135, and/or a sixth side 140. The first side 115 may be opposed to the second side 120, the third side 125 may be opposed to the fourth side 130, and/or the fifth side 135 may be opposed to the sixth side 140. In some implementations, a side of the plug fan housing may be open and/or include an opening. In some implementations, the plug fan assembly may be oriented in a device such that the first side 115 may be oriented downwards and be the bottom side of the plug fan assembly 100, as illustrated in FIGS. 1-7. The second side 120 may then be the top side of the plug fan assembly. The plug fan assembly may be oriented in a device in other directions, in some implementations. For example, the plug fan assembly may be oriented in a device such that the sixth side 140 may be oriented downwards and be the bottom side of the plug fan assembly 100. The plug fan assembly 100 may be oriented in a device such that a fourth side 130 may be oriented downwards and be the bottom side of the plug fan assembly.

[0025] In some implementations, the plug fan assembly may be disposed in the device such that access to the fourth side 130 and the blower wheel 110 may be facilitated (e.g., the fourth side 130 may be proximate an opening of a device, through which the plug fan assembly was coupled to a component of the device. By orienting the plug fan assembly such that access to the blower wheel is facilitated, repairs and/or maintenance of the plug fan assembly may be facilitated.

[0026] The plug fan housing 105 may have a length 145, a width 150, and a height 160. The length may be a distance between a third side 125 and a fourth side 130. The width may be a distance between a fifth side 135 and a sixth side 140. The height may be the distance between the first side 115 and the second side 120. The length 145 of the plug fan housing may be approximately 40 inches to approximately 43 inches, in some implementations. The width 150 of the plug fan housing 105 may be approximately 19 inches to approximately 22 inches. The height 160 of the plug fan housing may be approximately 21 inches to approximately 24 inches. In some implementations, the height 120 of the plug fan housing may be less than approximately 23 inches.

[0027] The first side 115 of the plug fan housing 105 may include an opening 118. The opening 118 may be adapted to be an air outlet. For example, the opening 118 may be the air outlet for the plug fan housing. In some implementations, the first side 115 may be open and the first side may be adapted to be the air outlet for the plug fan housing. The fifth side 135 may include an opening 138. The opening 138 of the fifth side 135 may be an air inlet. Thus, during operation of the plug fan assembly, air is drawn into the plug fan housing by the blower wheel 110 via the air inlet (e.g., opening 138) and allowed to flow out of the air outlet (e.g., opening 118).

[0028] The plug fan housing may include one or more angled corners and/or a flared portion. As illustrated, the plug fan housing may include a first angled corner 165, a second angled corner 170, and a flared portion 175. The first angled corner 165 may be disposed between the third side 125 and the second side 120. For example, the first angled corner may be disposed on the third side 125 approximately 12.5 inches to approximately 13.5 inches from the first side 115. The first angled corner may be disposed on the second side 120 approximately 34.5 inches to approximately 35.5 inches from the fourth side 130. The first angled corner 165 may be disposed at a first angle 168 relative to an axis 180 parallel to the second side 120 (e.g., the first angle may be the angle between axis 180 parallel to the second side 120 and an axis 169 parallel to the angled corner). The first angle 168 may be approximately 10 degrees to approximately 80 degrees. The first angle 168 may be approximately 15 degrees to approximately 70 degrees. The first angle 168 may be approximately 59 to approximately 61 degrees. In some implementations, the first angle 168 may be approximately 60 degrees.

[0029] The second angled corner 170 may be disposed between the second side 120 and the fourth side 130. For example, the second angled corner 170 may be disposed on the second side approximately 31 to approximately 32 inches from the third side 125. The second angled corner 170 may be disposed on the fourth side 130 approximately 21 inches to approximately 22 inches from the first side 115. The second angled corner 170 may be disposed at a second angle 172 relative to an axis 180 parallel to the second side 120 (e.g., the second angle may be the angle between the axis 180 parallel to the second side an axis 173 parallel to the second angled corner). The second angle 172 may be approximately 10 degrees to approximately 80 degrees. The second angle 172 may be approximately 15 degrees to approximately 70 degrees. The second angle 172 may be approximately 9 degrees to approximately 11 degrees. In some implementations, the second angle may be approximately 10 degrees.

[0030] The first angle of the first angled corner may be approximately the same as the second angle of the second angled corner. In some implementations, the first angle of the first angled corner may be different from the second angle of the second angled corner. In some implementations, the first angle and the second angle may be selected such that the second side slopes from the first angled corner to the second angled corner in an approximately straight plane.

[0031] The flared portion 175 may be disposed proximate the first side 115 (e.g., proximate an air outlet). The flared portion may be approximately 4.5 inches to approximately 5.5 inches high. The flared portion may be approximately 4 to approximately 6 inches wide. The flared portion may be approximately 40 inches to approximately 43 inches in length. The flared portion 175 may be a portion of the sixth side 140. For example, the flared portion 175 may be a slanted wall of the sixth side that is disposed along an edge between at least a portion of the first side 115 and at least a portion of the sixth side 140. The slanted wall of the flared portion 175 may be disposed at a third angle from an axis 185 parallel to the first side 115 (e.g., the third angle may be the angle between the axis 185 parallel to the first side 115 and an axis 179 parallel to the slanted wall of the flared portion). The third angle may be approximately 48 degrees to approximately 52 degrees. In some implementations, the third angle may be approximately 50 degrees.

[0032] In some implementations, the performance of the plug fan assembly with angled corner(s) and/or a flared portion may be similar to a plug fan assembly with a greater clearance between the blower wheel and the inner surface of the plug fan housing. For example, utilizing a plug fan assembly with angled corner(s) and/or flared portions may increase the static capability at high airflows (e.g., greater than approximately 4000 CFM) by approximately 6% to approximately 10% (e.g., when compared to a plug fan assembly without angled corner(s) and/or flared portions). In some implementations, the static capability for a plug fan assembly with angled corner(s) and/or flared portion(s) may be approximately 1.92 inches water at airflows such as approximately 4800 CFM (cubic feet per minute). In some implementations, utilizing a plug fan assembly with angled corner(s) and/or flared portions may reduce the power of the plug fan assembly at low airflows (e.g., less than or equal to approximately 4000 CFM) by approximately 0.8% to approximately 3.1% (e.g., when compared to a plug fan assembly without angled corner(s) and/or flared portions). For example, a plug fan assembly with angled corner(s) and/or flared portions may have a reduction in power of the plug fan assembly by approximately 0.8% to approximately 3.1% when the airflow is approximately 2800 CFM to approximately 4100 CFM and the static pressure is approximately 0.25 inches water to approximately 0.35 inches water. The additions of the angled corners and/or flared portions to a plug fan housing may allow a smaller housing in height to be utilized without substantially decreasing the performance of the plug fan assembly (e.g., when compared with housing with a greater height). For example, the performance of the plug fan assembly may be increased by utilizing the angled corner(s) and/or flared portion (e.g., when compared to plug fan assemblies of similar configurations (e.g., length, width, height, blower wheel size and/or positioning)).

[0033] The blower wheel 110 may be disposed in a position in the plug fan housing 105. In some implementations, the blower wheel 110 may be disposed proximate a wall of the housing 105, such as a third side 125 or a fourth side 130 of the housing. For example, a center of a blower wheel 110 may be disposed at a perpendicular distance of approximately 15 to approximately 16 inches from a fourth side 130 of the plug fan housing 105. The center of the blower wheel 110 may be disposed at a perpendicular distance approximately 11 to approximately 12 inches from first side 115. In some implementations, the blower wheel 110 may be disposed in the plug fan housing 105 such that a clearance is between an inner surface of the plug fan housing 105 and a tip of a blade of a blower wheel 110. The clearance may be the smallest distance between any point on the blower wheel 110 and any inner surface point in the plug fan housing (e.g., the perpendicular distance between a tip of a blower wheel and an inner surface proximate the second side 120). The clearance may be less than approximately 1.5 inches. In some implementations, the clearance may be approximately 1.05 inches to approximately 0.95 inches. The clearance may be approximately 1 inch.

[0034] The plug fan housing may include one or more coupling members proximate a first side 115. The plug fan assembly 100 may be coupled to at least a portion of a device via the coupling members. The coupling members may include a flange (e.g., a rail), protrusion, and/or openings (e.g., through which fasteners may be received). In some implementations, the length of the plug fan housing including the coupling members may be approximately 43 inches to approximately 45 inches.

[0035] Although FIGS. 1-6 illustrate an implementation of an example plug fan assembly, other implementations may be utilized as appropriate. For example, although the plug fan assembly has been described in terms of a top, bottom, and/or various sides in FIGS. 1-6, the plug fan may be oriented in any direction as appropriate. In some implementations, the plug fan assembly may be oriented at an angle. In some implementations, the plug fan assembly may be oriented such that the second side 125 or a third side 130 is disposed downwards and is the bottom side of the plug fan assembly.

[0036] In some implementations, although the position of the blower wheel is depicted proximate a side of the plug fan assembly, different positions of the blower wheel may utilized. For example, the blower wheel may be disposed proximate a center of a length of the plug fan housing. The blower wheel may be disposed in an opposite manner as depicted in FIG. 1, in some implementations (e.g., proximate the third side 125). Although a blower wheel as been described, other types of blowers and blower blades may be utilized.

[0037] In some implementations, the plug fan housing may include an opening disposed in the sixth side 140 to receive at least a portion of the blower wheel. The opening be utilized to couple the plug fan housing and the blower wheel and/or position the blower wheel at least partially in the plug fan housing.

[0038] Although two angled corners and one flared portion are illustrated in the figures, other configurations may be utilized as appropriate. For example, the plug fan housing may include two angled corners. The plug fan housing may include one angled corner and one flared portion. In some implementations, the flared portion may include two or more flared portions. For example, the sixth side 140 of the plug fan housing may include a first flared portion proximate a second side 125 and a separate second flared portion proximate a third side 130. In some implementations, the plug fan assembly may include a flared portion. The flared portion may be disposed on the fifth side 135 and proximate the first side 115, in some implementations.

[0039] The plug fan assembly may be utilized in various devices, such as air conditioning systems, air movers, etc. FIG. 7 illustrates an implementation of an example air conditioning system 700 that includes a plug fan assembly 705, such as a rooftop air conditioning system. As illustrated, the air conditioning system 700 includes air ducting 710 such that air may be provided to the air conditioning system, an evaporator 715, a heat exchanger 720, and a compressor 725. The arrow indicates the path of air drawn from the duct 710 and leaving the air conditioning system via an outlet 710 as conditioned air (e.g., air at an altered temperature and/or humidity, as requested by a user). As illustrated, the plug fan assembly is coupled to the heat exchanger 720 via one or more coupling members 735. In some implementations, the heat exchanger may include coupling member(s) to engage with the coupling members of the plug fan assembly 705. For example, the coupling members of the heat exchanger may include recesses adapted to receive a flange of the plug fan assembly. Fasteners may be utilized to couple the plug fan assembly 705 and the heat exchanger 720.

[0040] During use, warm air is provided to the system via ducting 710 (e.g., a blower may draw air into the system), the warm air passes over the evaporator 715 to increase the temperature of and at least partially evaporate the refrigerant in the evaporator. The temperature of the warm air may be reduced and the air flow may be provided to the plug fan assembly 705. The refrigerant may then be provided to the compressor. The compressor may increase the pressure of the refrigerant prior to allowing the refrigerant to flow from the outlet of the compressor to the heat exchanger. In the heat exchanger, air from the plug fan assembly 705 may be provided to the heat exchanger 720 such that refrigerant from the compressor is at least partially condensed by the air flow over the heat exchanger. The temperature of the air is thus reduced and provided via the outlet 730 to locations as requested by a user.

[0041] Although FIG. 7 illustrates an example of an air conditioning system, other components may be utilized in addition to and/or instead of the illustrated components. For example, the air conditioning system may include an expansion valve, dampers, filters, and/or other components. The heat exchanger may include a condenser, in some implementations.

[0042] In some implementations, the plug fan assembly may be utilized in place of the air moving unit described in U.S. patent application Ser. No. 12/956,431 entitled "Air Moving Unit and a HVAC System Employing the Same" filed on Nov. 30, 2010.

[0043] In various implementations, during use, a request for operation of a device, such as an air conditioner, may be received. The device may be operated to satisfy the request, which may include operation of the plug fan assembly (e.g., air may be drawn in through an inlet of the plug fan assembly via the rotation of the blower wheel; the velocity of the air may be increased by the blower wheel; the air with a profile may be provided via an outlet to at least a portion of the device, such as a heat exchanger; where the profile of the air is based at least partially on the configuration of the housing, such as inclusion of angled corner(s) and/or flanged portion(s)).

[0044] In some implementations, maintenance of a plug fan assembly may be requested (e.g., by a user, by a device that indicates a malfunction). The plug fan assembly may be accessed (e.g., through a housing of the device) and may be removed (e.g., uncoupled and at least partially removed form the housing of the device). The plug fan assembly or portions thereof may be replaced and/or repaired. The plug fan assembly (e.g., replaced and/or repaired) may be coupled to the device and the device may be allowed to operate. Thus, rather than dismantling the entire device, a plug fan assembly may be removed for quick replacement and/or access to the plug fan assembly. Repair and/or replacement of the plug fan assembly may be facilitated by the housing configuration of the plug fan assembly.

[0045] The described patent application (U.S. patent application Ser. No. 12/956,431) has been incorporated by reference. The described patent application is incorporated by reference to the extent that no conflict exists between the various described systems and/or processes and the described patent application. Any portion, of the described patent application that is incorporated by reference, that is conflicting with the various described systems and/or processes are not incorporated by reference.

[0046] The described processes may be implemented by various systems, such as plug fan assembly 100 and/or system 700. In addition, various operations may be added, deleted, and/or modified.
