plurality of adapters may be releasably secured at one end of a
receptacle having a selected volume utilizing a retainer ring. Each
adapter has an adapter end that is differently configured from others for
secured releasable engagement with differently designed engine fill
ports, a central fluid passage therethrough remaining unobstructed after
engagement of a selected one of the adapters with the receptacle. Seals
are mounted for sealing between the receptacle and the selected adapter
and at the engine fill port.Claims:
1. A fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at
different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal
combustion engines, said assembly comprising:a receptacle characterized
by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced open ends;
andat least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a
central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends,
said first adapter ends configured for secured releasable engagement with
said second open end of said receptacle and said second adapter ends each
differently configured from one another for secured releasable engagement
with the different ones of the alternatively configured engine fill
ports, said central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement
of a selected one of said adapter portions with said receptacle.
2. The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, further comprising first and second seals, said first seal received between said receptacle and said selected one of said adapter portions and said second seal received adjacent to said second adapter ends for sealing engagement at the different ones of the alternatively configured engine fill ports when engaged thereat.

The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein said second open end of said receptacle includes an annular collar portion defining an inner ledge at said second open end, and wherein said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions each include a peripheral lip and an engageable outer surface thereat, said lip configured to abut said inner ledge of said annular collar portion of said receptacle, said assembly further comprising a retainer ring configured to encompass said annular collar portion of said receptacle and having an engageable inner surface for secured releasable engagement with said engageable outer surface of a selected one of said second adapter portions.

The assembly of claim 3, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 3, wherein said second open end of said receptacle has a bevel adjacent to said inner ledge and wherein said peripheral lip of said first and second adapter portions each include a cant matable at said bevel thereby to accommodate secured releasable engagement and disengagement of said engageable surfaces of said retainer ring and said selected one of said second adapter portions.

The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein at least one of said adapter portions is configured for bayonet-type fill port connections and includes a peripheral securing lug assembly at said second adapter end configured to engage a selected bayonet-type fill port having a particular size and configuration.

The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein at least one of said adapter portions is configured for threaded-type fill port connections and includes a threaded peripheral surface at said second adapter end configured to engage a selected threaded-type fill port having a particular size and configuration.
7. The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein said first adapter portion includes a peripheral securing lug assembly at said second adapter end configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, and wherein said second adapter portions includes a threaded peripheral surface at said second adapter end configured to engage a threaded-type fill port.
8. A fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines, said assembly comprising:a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced receptacle ends;at least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends, said adapter portions configured for secured releasable engagement with said second receptacle end, said second adapter end of said first adapter portion including a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, said second adapter end of said second adapter portion including a threaded peripheral surface configured to engage a threaded-type fill port, said central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of said adapter portions with said receptacle;a first seal located at a selected one of said first adapter ends of said adapter portions for sealing engagement at said receptacle; anda second seal receivable at said second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat.
9. The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, further comprising a retainer ring for releasably securing a selected one of said adapter portions on said receptacle.
10. The assembly of claim 9, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 9, wherein said second receptacle end and said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions include matable structure to accommodate secured releasable engagement and disengagement of said retainer ring.
11. The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, wherein one of said second receptacle end and said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions includes a neck having peripheral lugs thereat, and wherein the other of said second receptacle end and said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions includes an annular flange having recesses therein accommodating receipt therethrough of said peripheral lugs.

The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, wherein said second receptacle end includes a neck having a decreasing diameter, and wherein said fluid passages of said first and second adapter portions are configured to receive said neck and be retained thereon by friction.
13. The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, wherein said second receptacle end includes a threaded periphery and wherein each of said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions includes a periphery threaded for receiving said threaded periphery of said second receptacle end.
14. The assembly of claim 13, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 13, wherein said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions have a diameter substantially greater than said second adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions, and wherein diameters of said receptacle ends are substantially the same.
15. A fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines, said assembly comprising:a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between a first receptacle end and an annular collar portion defining an inner ledge at a second receptacle end;at least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends, said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions each including a peripheral lip and an engageable outer surface thereat, said lip configured to abut said inner ledge of said annular collar portion of said receptacle, said second adapter end of said first adapter portion including a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, said second adapter end of said second adapter portion including a threaded peripheral surface configured to engage a threaded-type fill port, said central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of said adapter portions with said receptacle;a first seal mounted on said first adapter ends of said adapter portions for sealing engagement at said receptacle;a second seal receivable at said second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat; anda retainer ring configured to encompass said annular collar portion of said receptacle and having an engageable inner surface for secured releasable engagement with a selected one of said engageable outer surfaces of said first adapter ends of said adapter portions.
16. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said first receptacle end has a diameter greater than said second receptacle end.
17. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said first adapter portion includes a main body with a smaller diameter tubular protrusion opposite said main body from said first adapter end, said protrusion having a distal surface, said peripheral securing lug assembly of said second adapter end of said first adapter portion including a lug ring and a tubular insert having an annular flange at one end thereof, said insert securable in said tubular protrusion of said main body thereby holding said lug ring between said distal surface of said protrusion and said annular flange.

The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said central fluid passage of said first and second adapter portions each include a funneling section adjacent to said first adapter end and a substantially constant diameter outlet section extending from said funneling section to said second adapter end.
19. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said receptacle includes a small opening adjacent to said first receptacle end for hanging said receptacle.
20. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, further comprising a cover releasably securable over said first receptacle end of said receptacle.Description:
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001]This invention relates to special use containers and funnels, and, more particularly, relates to accessories adapted for assisting the process of oil addition though a fill port at an internal combustion engine valve cover or the like.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002]Numerous devices have been heretofore suggested and or utilized suggesting adaptations made to common funnels for securement to fill ports in automotive engines to assist with fluid addition (see, for example, U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,703,867, 5,634,502, 4,559,984, 5,033,521, 6,397,907, 6,935,389, 6,568,440, and 2,811,181). In one such device, adapted for permanent attachment, different sized spacer gaskets are provided to accommodate different fill port opening sizes (see U.S. Pat. No. 5,316,059).
[0003]Such heretofore known devices in many cases are overly complex and/or are configured for more or less permanent retention at the fill port (i.e., replacing the fill port cap). Most are merely funneling devices, few providing for retention at the device of a useful quantity of fluid to be added. Some arrangements require models specifically adapted to fit each particular fill port size and/or configuration, while those adapted for connection to more than a single fill port size are cumbersome to install (often requiring that pieces of the device be installed in multiple installation steps at the fill port) and/or do not provide an unobstructed fluid flow passage through the device. Further improvements could thus still be utilized.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0004]Fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines are provided by this invention. The assemblies are configured to contain a useful quantity of fluid to be added to an internal combustion engine through a fill port while temporarily held in place at the engine fill port. The assemblies of this invention are adapted for use with plural fill port sizes and types and are simple to manufacture, use and reuse. The assemblies of this invention are applied at the fill port for use and removed after each use, the standard engine fill port cap being retained. A useful quantity of fluid is held in the assembly for addition through an unobstructed central passage. Installation and removal of the assemblies at the fill port require no procedures different from those required for application and removal of the standard fill port cap in use on the engine.
[0005]The assemblies of this invention include a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced ends. At least first and second adapter portions are provided, each characterized by a central fluid passage between first and second adapter ends. The adapter portions are configured for secured releasable engagement with the second end of the receptacle and are each differently configured from one another for secured releasable engagement with different styles and/or sizes of engine fill ports. The central fluid passage remains totally unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of the adapter portions with the receptacle.
[0006]More particularly, the second adapter end of at least one of the adapter portions may include a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port. The other adapter portion may be similarly configured but for a different style or size of bayonet-type fill port, or may be provided with a threaded peripheral surface at its second adapter end configured to engage a threaded-type fill port. Alternatively, both adapters could be configured for threaded-type fill ports of different style or size. A first seal is located at the first adapter ends for sealing engagement at the receptacle, and a second seal is receivable at the second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat.
[0007]The receptacle preferably includes an annular collar portion defining an inner ledge at the second receptacle end, the first adapter ends of the first and second adapter portions each including a peripheral lip and an engageable outer surface thereat, the lip configured to abut the inner ledge of the annular collar portion of the receptacle. A retainer ring encompasses the annular collar portion of the receptacle and has an engageable inner surface for releasably engaging selected one of the engageable outer surfaces of the first adapter ends of the adapter portions.
[0008]It is therefore an object of this invention to provide improved fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in internal combustion engine maintenance.
[0009]It is another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine that are adapted for use with plural fill port sizes and types.
[0010]It is still another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine that are simple to manufacture, use and reuse.
[0011]It is yet another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine wherein installation and removal of the assemblies at the fill port require no procedures different from those required for application and removal of the standard fill port cap in use on the engine.
[0012]It is still another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine that are adaptable to more than a single fill port size, that can contain a useful quantity of fluid in the assembly for addition, and that provide an unobstructed fluid flow passage through the assembly.
[0013]It is still another object of this invention to provide a fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines, the assembly including a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced open ends, and at least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends, the first adapter ends configured for secured releasable engagement with the second open end of the receptacle and the second adapter ends each differently configured from one another for secured releasable engagement with the different ones of the alternatively configured engine fill ports, the central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of the adapter portions with the receptacle.
[0014]It is yet another object of this invention to provide a fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines, the assembly including a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced receptacle ends, at least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends, the adapter portions configured for secured releasable engagement with the second receptacle end, the second adapter end of the first adapter portion including a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, the second adapter end of the second adapter portion including a threaded peripheral surface configured to engage a threaded-type fill port, the central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of the adapter portions with the receptacle, a first seal located at a selected one of the first adapter ends of the adapter portions for sealing engagement at the receptacle, and a second seal receivable at the second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat.
[0015]It is another object of this invention to provide a fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines, the assembly including a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between a first receptacle end and an annular collar portion defining an inner ledge at a second receptacle end, at least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends, the first adapter ends of the first and second adapter portions each including a peripheral lip and an engageable outer surface thereat, the lip configured to abut the inner ledge of the annular collar portion of the receptacle, the second adapter end of the first adapter portion including a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, the second adapter end of the second adapter portion including a threaded peripheral surface configured to engage a threaded-type fill port, the central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of the adapter portions with the receptacle, a first seal mounted on the first adapter ends of the adapter portions for sealing engagement at the receptacle, a second seal receivable at the second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat, and a retainer ring configured to encompass the annular collar portion of the receptacle and having an engageable inner surface for secured releasable engagement with a selected one of the engageable outer surfaces of the first adapter ends of the adapter portions.
[0016]With these and other objects in view, which will become apparent to one skilled in the art as the description proceeds, this invention resides in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts substantially as hereinafter described, and more particularly defined by the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the herein disclosed invention are meant to be included as come within the scope of the claims.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0027]The presently preferred embodiment 11 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly this invention is illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 5. The assembly includes receptacle 13 having a selected useful interior volume in view of the filling task undertaken. Receptacle 13 is configured as a modified cylindrical containment structure between first and second spaced receptacle ends 15 and 17 respectively, open end 15 having a larger diameter than open end 17 and the cylindrical form thus tapering between the receptacle ends. Receptacle 13 has small opening 19 adjacent to end 15 for hanging storage of the receptacle. Lip 21 at end 15 may be provided to accommodate snap on/off lid 23 releasably securable over receptacle end 15 to thus cover the receptacle when in storage thereby avoiding particulate buildup in the receptacle.
[0028]Receptacle end 17 of the receptacle 13 includes a cylindrical outlet 25 having an annular collar portion 27 at the distal end thereof. Collar portion 27 defines inner ledge 29 thereat with a matable stabilizing bevel 31 (a planar surface interrupting the otherwise generally arcuate surface) adjacent thereto at outlet 25 to accommodate secured releasable engagement and disengagement of retainer ring 33 for releasably securing a selected one of adapter portions 41 or 43 on the receptacle (as more fully detailed hereinafter).
[0029]While two different adapter portions 41 and 43 are illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 5 for releasable securement at end 17 of receptacle 13, it should be appreciated that receptacle 13 can be utilized with any number of differently sized or configured adapters each suitable for securement to an alternatively configured fill port (44, for example, in FIG. 3) of a particular make or model of internal combustion engine. Each adapter portion 41/43 has a central fluid passage 45 therethrough between first and second adapter ends 47 and 48, respectively. Passage 45 of adapter portions 41/43 each include a funneling section 49 adjacent to first adapter end 47 and a substantially constant diameter outlet section 50 extending from funneling section 49 to second adapter end 48 (see FIGS. 2 and 3).
[0030]Each adapter portion 41/43 is configured for secured releasable engagement at receptacle end 17 at first adapter ends 47. Second adapter ends 48 are each differently configured from one another for secured releasable engagement with the different ones of the alternatively configured engine fill ports, central fluid passage 45 remaining totally unobstructed after engagement of a selected adapter portion with receptacle 13. To this end, first adapter ends 47 of adapter portions 41/43 of assembly 11 each include peripheral lip 51 and engageable outer surface 53 (a threadable structure) thereat, lip 51 configured to abut and nest at inner ledge 29 of annular collar portion 27 of receptacle 13.
[0031]Retainer ring 33 in turn includes an engageable inner surface 55 (a threadable structure) for secured releasable engagement with engageable outer surface 53 of the selected adapter portion 41/43. Retainer ring 33 has an upper retention collar 57 adjacent to engagable inner surface 55 configured to encompass annular collar portion 27 at receptacle end 17. In this fashion, collar portion 27 is fully captured by the combination of lip 29 of adapter portion 41/43 and retainer ring 33 thereby securing receptacle 13 to adapter portion 41/43. The ability to thread retainer ring 33 on adapter surface 53 for engagement and disengagement of receptacle 13 from a selected adapter portion 41/43 is accommodated by matable stabilizing cant 61 (see FIGS. 4 and 5, a planar surface interrupting the otherwise generally arcuate surface) at peripheral lip 51 in cooperation with matable stabilizing bevel 31 of collar portion 27. Cant 61 is matable at the bevel 31 when the selected adapter portion 41/43 is located in receptacle 13 thereby preventing rotation of adapter portion 41/43 during engagement and disengagement of retainer ring 33.
[0032]Adapter portion 41 (FIGS. 1, 2 and 4) includes main body 65 with smaller diameter tubular protrusion 67 located opposite the main body from first adapter end 47. Protrusion 67 includes distal surface 69 and retainer shoulder 71 at the end thereof. Peripheral securing lug assembly 73 of second adapter end 48 of adapter portion 41 includes lug ring 75 having lugs 77 axially extending therefrom (as is known in the art), and tubular insert 79 with annular flange 81 at one end thereof. Insert 79 is securable in tubular protrusion 67 of main body 65 thereby holding lug ring 75 mounted around shoulder 71 between distal surface 69 of protrusion 67 and annular flange 81 of insert 79.
[0033]Adapter portion 43 (FIGS. 3 and 5) includes main body 85 having smaller diameter protrusion 87 with a threaded peripheral surface at adapter end 48. Adapter 43 is configured for adaptation to a filler port having a particular size and thread configuration. Main bodies 65 and 85 may be configured as necessary in length and diameter to accommodate a selected fill port adaptation. Both adapter portions 41/43 include seal seating surface 89 adjacent to their respective smaller diameter protrusions 67/87, and have ring seal seat 91 located at adapter end 47 adjacent to peripheral lip 51. Ring seal 93 is received in seat 91 thus sealing between receptacle 13 and the selected one of adapter portions 41/43. Washer-type seal 95 is received at seat 89 for sealing engagement between adapter portions 41/43 and the engine fill port when engaged thereat.
[0034]As may be appreciated, adapter portion 41 is a bayonet-type fill port connection dimensioned for a selected bayonet-type fill port having a particular size and configuration. Such connections utilizing securing lug arrangements are well known in the engine arts. Adapter portion 43, on the other hand, is configured for threaded-type fill port connections which are also known in the engine arts. Adapter portion 43 is also dimensioned to engage a selected threaded-type fill port having a particular size and configuration. In any particular arrangement utilized for the assembly of this invention, assembly 11 may include plural differently configured adapters of the adapter portion 41 variety, plural differently configured adapters of the adapter portion 43 variety, or one or more of both types of adapter portions 41/43.
[0035]Turning now to FIG. 6, a second embodiment 101 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly of this invention is illustrated (shown with only one type of adapter portion, it being understood that both types of adapter portion 41/43 configurations could be adapted to this embodiment utilizing structures taught hereinabove). This embodiment includes receptacle 103 similar in many regards to receptacle 13 except for the configuration of outlet end 105. Outlet end 105 includes a smaller diameter neck 107 adjacent to open end 109, neck 107 having peripheral lugs 111 (preferably two lugs) defined thereat. Adapter portion 113 (of the threaded-type fill port connection variety, similar to adapter portion 43 in many regards) includes annular flange 115 at first adapter end 117 with recesses 119 therein accommodating receipt therethrough of peripheral lugs 111 at neck 107 of receptacle 103.
[0036]When thus inserted and turned past recesses 119, receptacle 103 is thereafter secured to adapter portion 113. This standard bayonet-type connection with the male component at receptacle 103 and the female component at adapter portion 113 accommodates quick connection and disconnection of differently configured adapters for differently configured fill ports while still providing an unobstructed central fluid passage 121. As before, seals 123 and 125 are provided for sealing between adapter portion 113 and receptacle 103 and between adapter portion 113 and the fill port to which applied, respectively.
[0037]FIG. 7 shows a third embodiment 131 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly of this invention utilizing a press-fit connection between receptacle 133 and adapter portion 135 (again, only one type of adapter portion is shown, it being understood that both types of adapter portion 41/43 configurations can be adapted to this embodiment). Outlet end 137 of receptacle 133 includes neck 139 having a slightly decreasing diameter from its origin at receptacle end 137 to its distal end 141. Adapter portion 135 (of the threaded-type fill port connection variety, similar to adapter portion 43 in many regards) has passage 143 therethrough configured to snuggly receive neck 139, and thus retained thereat by friction. Connection and disconnection of differently configured adapters to/from receptacle 133 is thus accommodated while still providing an unobstructed central fluid passage 145. Seals 147 and 149 are provided for sealing between adapter portion 135 and receptacle 133 and between adapter portion 135 and the fill port when applied, respectively.
[0038]FIG. 8 illustrates a fourth embodiment 151 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly of this invention. Here, the useful volume of the receptacle is jointly defined by receptacle portion 153 and adapter portions 155/157. Receptacle portion 153 has threaded peripheries 158 at both ends 159 and 161. Threaded connection of threaded cover 163 is thus accommodated at end 159. Each adapter portion 155/157 has a diameter substantially greater at first adapter end 165 than at second adapter end 167, adapter ends 165 having an internally threaded periphery 169 for receiving the threaded periphery at end 161 of receptacle portion 153.
[0039]Adapter portion 155 is configured for threaded-type fill port connections at threaded end 171, and includes annular shoulder 173 providing seal seating surface 175 for washer-type seal 177 (to seal between adapter portion 155 and the fill port to which applied. Adapter portion 157 is configured for bayonet-type fill port connections and includes smaller diameter neck 179 and peripheral lugs 181 (preferably two lugs). In both cases, quick connection and disconnection of the differently configured adapter portions 155/157 for differently configured fill ports is accommodated while still providing an unobstructed central fluid passage 183.
[0040]Turning now to FIG. 9, a fifth embodiment 191 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly of this invention will be described. As before, receptacle 193 and adapter portions 195/197 are provided. This embodiment utilizes a standard bayonet-type connection that is the reverse of the embodiment shown in FIG. 6, with the female (flange and access recesses) component 199 at receptacle 193 and the male (neck and peripheral lugs) components 201 at the variously configured adapter portions 195/197. In the same manner, however, connection and disconnection of adapter portions is provided without obstruction of central fluid passages 203. Washer-type seals 205 and 207 are seated at opposite sides of shoulder 209 and seal between the selected adapter portion 195/197 and receptacle 193 and between adapter portion 195/197 and the fill port to which applied, respectively.
[0041]The fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies of this invention are all configured to contain a useful quantity of fluid to be added to an internal combustion engine through an unobstructed central passage while temporarily held in place at the engine fill port. The assemblies of this invention are adapted for use with plural fill port sizes and types and are simple to manufacture, use and reuse, the assembly being removed from the fill port after each use and with the standard engine fill port cap being retained. Installation and removal of the assemblies at the fill port require no procedures different from those required for normal application and removal of the standard fill port cap in use on the engine.
Claims:
1. A fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at
different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal
combustion engines, said assembly comprising:a receptacle characterized
by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced open ends;
andat least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a
central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends,
said first adapter ends configured for secured releasable engagement with
said second open end of said receptacle and said second adapter ends each
differently configured from one another for secured releasable engagement
with the different ones of the alternatively configured engine fill
ports, said central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement
of a selected one of said adapter portions with said receptacle.
2. The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, further comprising first and second seals, said first seal received between said receptacle and said selected one of said adapter portions and said second seal received adjacent to said second adapter ends for sealing engagement at the different ones of the alternatively configured engine fill ports when engaged thereat.
3. The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein said second open end of said receptacle includes an annular collar portion defining an inner ledge at said second open end, and wherein said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions each include a peripheral lip and an engageable outer surface thereat, said lip configured to abut said inner ledge of said annular collar portion of said receptacle, said assembly further comprising a retainer ring configured to encompass said annular collar portion of said receptacle and having an engageable inner surface for secured releasable engagement with said engageable outer surface of a selected one of said second adapter portions.

The assembly of claim 3, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 3, wherein said second open end of said receptacle has a bevel adjacent to said inner ledge and wherein said peripheral lip of said first and second adapter portions each include a cant matable at said bevel thereby to accommodate secured releasable engagement and disengagement of said engageable surfaces of said retainer ring and said selected one of said second adapter portions.
5. The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein at least one of said adapter portions is configured for bayonet-type fill port connections and includes a peripheral securing lug assembly at said second adapter end configured to engage a selected bayonet-type fill port having a particular size and configuration.
6. The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein at least one of said adapter portions is configured for threaded-type fill port connections and includes a threaded peripheral surface at said second adapter end configured to engage a selected threaded-type fill port having a particular size and configuration.
7. The assembly of claim 1, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 1, wherein said first adapter portion includes a peripheral securing lug assembly at said second adapter end configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, and wherein said second adapter portions includes a threaded peripheral surface at said second adapter end configured to engage a threaded-type fill port.
8. A fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines, said assembly comprising:a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced receptacle ends;at least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends, said adapter portions configured for secured releasable engagement with said second receptacle end, said second adapter end of said first adapter portion including a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, said second adapter end of said second adapter portion including a threaded peripheral surface configured to engage a threaded-type fill port, said central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of said adapter portions with said receptacle;a first seal located at a selected one of said first adapter ends of said adapter portions for sealing engagement at said receptacle; anda second seal receivable at said second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat.
9. The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, further comprising a retainer ring for releasably securing a selected one of said adapter portions on said receptacle.
10. The assembly of claim 9, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 9, wherein said second receptacle end and said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions include matable structure to accommodate secured releasable engagement and disengagement of said retainer ring.
11. The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, wherein one of said second receptacle end and said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions includes a neck having peripheral lugs thereat, and wherein the other of said second receptacle end and said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions includes an annular flange having recesses therein accommodating receipt therethrough of said peripheral lugs.
12. The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, wherein said second receptacle end includes a neck having a decreasing diameter, and wherein said fluid passages of said first and second adapter portions are configured to receive said neck and be retained thereon by friction.
13. The assembly of claim 8, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 8, wherein said second receptacle end includes a threaded periphery and wherein each of said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions includes a periphery threaded for receiving said threaded periphery of said second receptacle end.
14. The assembly of claim 13, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 13, wherein said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions have a diameter substantially greater than said second adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions, and wherein diameters of said receptacle ends are substantially the same.
15. A fluid receptacle and adapter assembly for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines, said assembly comprising:a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between a first receptacle end and an annular collar portion defining an inner ledge at a second receptacle end;at least first and second adapter portions each characterized by a central fluid passage therethrough between first and second adapter ends, said first adapter ends of said first and second adapter portions each including a peripheral lip and an engageable outer surface thereat, said lip configured to abut said inner ledge of said annular collar portion of said receptacle, said second adapter end of said first adapter portion including a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port, said second adapter end of said second adapter portion including a threaded peripheral surface configured to engage a threaded-type fill port, said central fluid passage remaining unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of said adapter portions with said receptacle;a first seal mounted on said first adapter ends of said adapter portions for sealing engagement at said receptacle;a second seal receivable at said second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat; anda retainer ring configured to encompass said annular collar portion of said receptacle and having an engageable inner surface for secured releasable engagement with a selected one of said engageable outer surfaces of said first adapter ends of said adapter portions.
16. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said first receptacle end has a diameter greater than said second receptacle end.
17. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said first adapter portion includes a main body with a smaller diameter tubular protrusion opposite said main body from said first adapter end, said protrusion having a distal surface, said peripheral securing lug assembly of said second adapter end of said first adapter portion including a lug ring and a tubular insert having an annular flange at one end thereof, said insert securable in said tubular protrusion of said main body thereby holding said lug ring between said distal surface of said protrusion and said annular flange.
18. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said central fluid passage of said first and second adapter portions each include a funneling section adjacent to said first adapter end and a substantially constant diameter outlet section extending from said funneling section to said second adapter end.
19. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, wherein said receptacle includes a small opening adjacent to said first receptacle end for hanging said receptacle.
20. The assembly of claim 15, incorporating by this reference all the limitations of claim 15, further comprising a cover releasably securable over said first receptacle end of said receptacle.

FIELD OF THE INVENTION
[0001]This invention relates to special use containers and funnels, and, more particularly, relates to accessories adapted for assisting the process of oil addition though a fill port at an internal combustion engine valve cover or the like.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002]Numerous devices have been heretofore suggested and or utilized suggesting adaptations made to common funnels for securement to fill ports in automotive engines to assist with fluid addition (see, for example, U.S. Pat. Nos. 4,703,867, 5,634,502, 4,559,984, 5,033,521, 6,397,907, 6,935,389, 6,568,440, and 2,811,181). In one such device, adapted for permanent attachment, different sized spacer gaskets are provided to accommodate different fill port opening sizes (see U.S. Pat. No. 5,316,059).
[0003]Such heretofore known devices in many cases are overly complex and/or are configured for more or less permanent retention at the fill port (i.e., replacing the fill port cap). Most are merely funneling devices, few providing for retention at the device of a useful quantity of fluid to be added. Some arrangements require models specifically adapted to fit each particular fill port size and/or configuration, while those adapted for connection to more than a single fill port size are cumbersome to install (often requiring that pieces of the device be installed in multiple installation steps at the fill port) and/or do not provide an unobstructed fluid flow passage through the device. Further improvements could thus still be utilized.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
[0004]Fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at different ones of alternatively configured fill ports of internal combustion engines are provided by this invention. The assemblies are configured to contain a useful quantity of fluid to be added to an internal combustion engine through a fill port while temporarily held in place at the engine fill port. The assemblies of this invention are adapted for use with plural fill port sizes and types and are simple to manufacture, use and reuse. The assemblies of this invention are applied at the fill port for use and removed after each use, the standard engine fill port cap being retained. A useful quantity of fluid is held in the assembly for addition through an unobstructed central passage. Installation and removal of the assemblies at the fill port require no procedures different from those required for application and removal of the standard fill port cap in use on the engine.
[0005]The assemblies of this invention include a receptacle characterized by a selected useful volume between first and second spaced ends. At least first and second adapter portions are provided, each characterized by a central fluid passage between first and second adapter ends. The adapter portions are configured for secured releasable engagement with the second end of the receptacle and are each differently configured from one another for secured releasable engagement with different styles and/or sizes of engine fill ports. The central fluid passage remains totally unobstructed after engagement of a selected one of the adapter portions with the receptacle.
[0006]More particularly, the second adapter end of at least one of the adapter portions may include a peripheral securing lug assembly configured to engage a bayonet-type fill port. The other adapter portion may be similarly configured but for a different style or size of bayonet-type fill port, or may be provided with a threaded peripheral surface at its second adapter end configured to engage a threaded-type fill port. Alternatively, both adapters could be configured for threaded-type fill ports of different style or size. A first seal is located at the first adapter ends for sealing engagement at the receptacle, and a second seal is receivable at the second adapter ends for sealing engagement at an engine fill port when engaged thereat.
[0007]The receptacle preferably includes an annular collar portion defining an inner ledge at the second receptacle end, the first adapter ends of the first and second adapter portions each including a peripheral lip and an engageable outer surface thereat, the lip configured to abut the inner ledge of the annular collar portion of the receptacle. A retainer ring encompasses the annular collar portion of the receptacle and has an engageable inner surface for releasably engaging selected one of the engageable outer surfaces of the first adapter ends of the adapter portions.
[0008]It is therefore an object of this invention to provide improved fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in internal combustion engine maintenance.
[0009]It is another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine that are adapted for use with plural fill port sizes and types.
[0010]It is still another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine that are simple to manufacture, use and reuse.
[0011]It is yet another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine wherein installation and removal of the assemblies at the fill port require no procedures different from those required for application and removal of the standard fill port cap in use on the engine.
[0012]It is still another object of this invention to provide fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies for use in fluid addition at an internal combustion engine that are adaptable to more than a single fill port size, that can contain a useful quantity of fluid in the assembly for addition, and that provide an unobstructed fluid flow passage through the assembly.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[0027]The presently preferred embodiment 11 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly this invention is illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 5. The assembly includes receptacle 13 having a selected useful interior volume in view of the filling task undertaken. Receptacle 13 is configured as a modified cylindrical containment structure between first and second spaced receptacle ends 15 and 17 respectively, open end 15 having a larger diameter than open end 17 and the cylindrical form thus tapering between the receptacle ends. Receptacle 13 has small opening 19 adjacent to end 15 for hanging storage of the receptacle. Lip 21 at end 15 may be provided to accommodate snap on/off lid 23 releasably securable over receptacle end 15 to thus cover the receptacle when in storage thereby avoiding particulate buildup in the receptacle.
[0028]Receptacle end 17 of the receptacle 13 includes a cylindrical outlet 25 having an annular collar portion 27 at the distal end thereof. Collar portion 27 defines inner ledge 29 thereat with a matable stabilizing bevel 31 (a planar surface interrupting the otherwise generally arcuate surface) adjacent thereto at outlet 25 to accommodate secured releasable engagement and disengagement of retainer ring 33 for releasably securing a selected one of adapter portions 41 or 43 on the receptacle (as more fully detailed hereinafter).
[0029]While two different adapter portions 41 and 43 are illustrated in FIGS. 1 through 5 for releasable securement at end 17 of receptacle 13, it should be appreciated that receptacle 13 can be utilized with any number of differently sized or configured adapters each suitable for securement to an alternatively configured fill port (44, for example, in FIG. 3) of a particular make or model of internal combustion engine. Each adapter portion 41/43 has a central fluid passage 45 therethrough between first and second adapter ends 47 and 48, respectively. Passage 45 of adapter portions 41/43 each include a funneling section 49 adjacent to first adapter end 47 and a substantially constant diameter outlet section 50 extending from funneling section 49 to second adapter end 48 (see FIGS. 2 and 3).
[0030]Each adapter portion 41/43 is configured for secured releasable engagement at receptacle end 17 at first adapter ends 47. Second adapter ends 48 are each differently configured from one another for secured releasable engagement with the different ones of the alternatively configured engine fill ports, central fluid passage 45 remaining totally unobstructed after engagement of a selected adapter portion with receptacle 13. To this end, first adapter ends 47 of adapter portions 41/43 of assembly 11 each include peripheral lip 51 and engageable outer surface 53 (a threadable structure) thereat, lip 51 configured to abut and nest at inner ledge 29 of annular collar portion 27 of receptacle 13.
[0031]Retainer ring 33 in turn includes an engageable inner surface 55 (a threadable structure) for secured releasable engagement with engageable outer surface 53 of the selected adapter portion 41/43. Retainer ring 33 has an upper retention collar 57 adjacent to engagable inner surface 55 configured to encompass annular collar portion 27 at receptacle end 17. In this fashion, collar portion 27 is fully captured by the combination of lip 29 of adapter portion 41/43 and retainer ring 33 thereby securing receptacle 13 to adapter portion 41/43. The ability to thread retainer ring 33 on adapter surface 53 for engagement and disengagement of receptacle 13 from a selected adapter portion 41/43 is accommodated by matable stabilizing cant 61 (see FIGS. 4 and 5, a planar surface interrupting the otherwise generally arcuate surface) at peripheral lip 51 in cooperation with matable stabilizing bevel 31 of collar portion 27. Cant 61 is matable at the bevel 31 when the selected adapter portion 41/43 is located in receptacle 13 thereby preventing rotation of adapter portion 41/43 during engagement and disengagement of retainer ring 33.
[0032]Adapter portion 41 (FIGS. 1, 2 and 4) includes main body 65 with smaller diameter tubular protrusion 67 located opposite the main body from first adapter end 47. Protrusion 67 includes distal surface 69 and retainer shoulder 71 at the end thereof. Peripheral securing lug assembly 73 of second adapter end 48 of adapter portion 41 includes lug ring 75 having lugs 77 axially extending therefrom (as is known in the art), and tubular insert 79 with annular flange 81 at one end thereof. Insert 79 is securable in tubular protrusion 67 of main body 65 thereby holding lug ring 75 mounted around shoulder 71 between distal surface 69 of protrusion 67 and annular flange 81 of insert 79.
[0033]Adapter portion 43 (FIGS. 3 and 5) includes main body 85 having smaller diameter protrusion 87 with a threaded peripheral surface at adapter end 48. Adapter 43 is configured for adaptation to a filler port having a particular size and thread configuration. Main bodies 65 and 85 may be configured as necessary in length and diameter to accommodate a selected fill port adaptation. Both adapter portions 41/43 include seal seating surface 89 adjacent to their respective smaller diameter protrusions 67/87, and have ring seal seat 91 located at adapter end 47 adjacent to peripheral lip 51. Ring seal 93 is received in seat 91 thus sealing between receptacle 13 and the selected one of adapter portions 41/43. Washer-type seal 95 is received at seat 89 for sealing engagement between adapter portions 41/43 and the engine fill port when engaged thereat.
[0034]As may be appreciated, adapter portion 41 is a bayonet-type fill port connection dimensioned for a selected bayonet-type fill port having a particular size and configuration. Such connections utilizing securing lug arrangements are well known in the engine arts. Adapter portion 43, on the other hand, is configured for threaded-type fill port connections which are also known in the engine arts. Adapter portion 43 is also dimensioned to engage a selected threaded-type fill port having a particular size and configuration. In any particular arrangement utilized for the assembly of this invention, assembly 11 may include plural differently configured adapters of the adapter portion 41 variety, plural differently configured adapters of the adapter portion 43 variety, or one or more of both types of adapter portions 41/43.
[0035]Turning now to FIG. 6, a second embodiment 101 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly of this invention is illustrated (shown with only one type of adapter portion, it being understood that both types of adapter portion 41/43 configurations could be adapted to this embodiment utilizing structures taught hereinabove). This embodiment includes receptacle 103 similar in many regards to receptacle 13 except for the configuration of outlet end 105. Outlet end 105 includes a smaller diameter neck 107 adjacent to open end 109, neck 107 having peripheral lugs 111 (preferably two lugs) defined thereat. Adapter portion 113 (of the threaded-type fill port connection variety, similar to adapter portion 43 in many regards) includes annular flange 115 at first adapter end 117 with recesses 119 therein accommodating receipt therethrough of peripheral lugs 111 at neck 107 of receptacle 103.
[0036]When thus inserted and turned past recesses 119, receptacle 103 is thereafter secured to adapter portion 113. This standard bayonet-type connection with the male component at receptacle 103 and the female component at adapter portion 113 accommodates quick connection and disconnection of differently configured adapters for differently configured fill ports while still providing an unobstructed central fluid passage 121. As before, seals 123 and 125 are provided for sealing between adapter portion 113 and receptacle 103 and between adapter portion 113 and the fill port to which applied, respectively.

Outlet end 137 of receptacle 133 includes neck 139 having a slightly decreasing diameter from its origin at receptacle end 137 to its distal end 141. Adapter portion 135 (of the threaded-type fill port connection variety, similar to adapter portion 43 in many regards) has passage 143 therethrough configured to snuggly receive neck 139, and thus retained thereat by friction. Connection and disconnection of differently configured adapters to/from receptacle 133 is thus accommodated while still providing an unobstructed central fluid passage 145. Seals 147 and 149 are provided for sealing between adapter portion 135 and receptacle 133 and between adapter portion 135 and the fill port when applied, respectively.

Here, the useful volume of the receptacle is jointly defined by receptacle portion 153 and adapter portions 155/157. Receptacle portion 153 has threaded peripheries 158 at both ends 159 and 161. Threaded connection of threaded cover 163 is thus accommodated at end 159. Each adapter portion 155/157 has a diameter substantially greater at first adapter end 165 than at second adapter end 167, adapter ends 165 having an internally threaded periphery 169 for receiving the threaded periphery at end 161 of receptacle portion 153.

[0040]Turning now to FIG. 9, a fifth embodiment 191 of the fluid receptacle and adapter assembly of this invention will be described. As before, receptacle 193 and adapter portions 195/197 are provided. This embodiment utilizes a standard bayonet-type connection that is the reverse of the embodiment shown in FIG. 6, with the female (flange and access recesses) component 199 at receptacle 193 and the male (neck and peripheral lugs) components 201 at the variously configured adapter portions 195/197. In the same manner, however, connection and disconnection of adapter portions is provided without obstruction of central fluid passages 203. Washer-type seals 205 and 207 are seated at opposite sides of shoulder 209 and seal between the selected adapter portion 195/197 and receptacle 193 and between adapter portion 195/197 and the fill port to which applied, respectively.
[0041]The fluid receptacle and fill port adapter assemblies of this invention are all configured to contain a useful quantity of fluid to be added to an internal combustion engine through an unobstructed central passage while temporarily held in place at the engine fill port. The assemblies of this invention are adapted for use with plural fill port sizes and types and are simple to manufacture, use and reuse, the assembly being removed from the fill port after each use and with the standard engine fill port cap being retained. Installation and removal of the assemblies at the fill port require no procedures different from those required for normal application and removal of the standard fill port cap in use on the engine.
