20090001014 | Composite caustic silica gel manufacturing method and gels made thereby - New silica gel materials and novel methods of producing such are provided. The method itself entails a manner of mixing the reactants together in a one-pot process such that the time required for aging is reduced without compromising the ability to target pore size production. In such a way, the pH of the reaction drives pore size development, thereby permitting a more efficient process to be followed in terms of expensive drying/heating steps being reduced timewise, if not altogether. Furthermore, in one embodiment, the resultant gel materials exhibit a certain pore size minimum while simultaneously exhibiting a degree of softness heretofore unavailable. As such, not only is this novel method more efficient in silica gel manufacture, but the resultant materials are completely novel as well. The gel materials made therefrom may be utilized in a variety of different end uses, such as cooking oil filtration, soft skin cleansers, dental abrasives, and the like. Methods of production and use, as well as the novel gel materials themselves, particularly caustic and composite gels, are thus encompassed within this invention. | 01-01-2009 |

20090232442 | Phase shift optical loop spectroscopy - The invention provides a method and apparatus for measuring one or more optical properties, such as absorbance and refractive index, of a test medium such as a gas, a liquid, or solid material. The method comprises providing a passive optical waveguide loop comprising the test medium, launching in the optical loop an intensity-modulated light at a reference phase, detecting a phase of said light along the optical waveguide loop, and comparing the detected phase of said light along the loop with the reference phase, wherein the comparison provides information about one or more optical properties of the test medium. | 09-17-2009 |
20100154620 | Optical Pickup for a Musical Instrument - This invention relates to an optical pickup for a musical instrument based on one or more than one Bragg grating. In one embodiment the optical pickup includes at least one Bragg grating in physical contact with a vibrating structure of the musical instrument so as to receive acoustic vibration associated with the musical instrument being played, such that a spectrum of the Bragg grating is modulated upon receipt of the acoustic vibration. A light signal reflected from the at least one Bragg grating may be amplified and the output may be directed to a loud speaker or other real-time output device. The output may also be directed to a data acquisition system for storage and further processing. The optical pickup may include two Bragg gratings arranged as an optical cavity. | 06-24-2010 |
20120212731 | MULTIPLE WAVELENGTH CAVITY RING-DOWN SPECTROSCOPY - Described are methods for multi-wavelength cavity ring-down spectroscopy; comprising simultaneously and continuously irradiating an optical cavity with light at two or more different wavelengths, each light being intensity-modulated at a different modulation frequency, detecting the light of two or more wavelengths after the light has travelled through the optical cavity; measuring an optical loss of each detected light; and determining a characteristic of the optical cavity from the optical loss of each detected light. Also described are apparatus and systems for multi-wavelength cavity ring-down spectroscopy. | 08-23-2012 |

20090097862 | Quantum Repeater - A quantum repeater includes a transmitter portion including a source, a set of matter systems, and an optical system. The source produces a probe pulse in a probe state having components with different photon numbers, and each matter system has at least one state that interacts with photons in the probe pulse to introduce a change in a phase space location of the probe state. The optical system can direct the probe pulse for interaction with one of the matter systems and direct light from the matter system for transmission on a first channel. | 04-16-2009 |
