20150091391DETECTION AND CLASSIFICATION SCHEME FOR POWER OVER ETHERNET SYSTEM - In a method performed by a PoE system, a PSE provides data and operating voltage over Ethernet wires to a PD. Before the full PoE voltage is supplied, the PSE generates a low current signal received by the PD. A circuit in the PD, connected across its input terminals, has a characteristic analog response to the PSE signal corresponding to the PD's PoE requirements, such as whether the PD is a Type 1 or Type 2 PD. The circuit may be a certain value capacitor, zener diode, resistor, or other circuit. The PSE may generate a fixed current, fixed voltage, or time varying signal. Upon the PSE sensing the magnitude of the analog signal response at a particular time, the PSE associates the response with the PoE requirements of the PD. The PSE then applies the full PoE voltage in accordance with the PD's PoE requirements.04-02-2015
20150145324POWER OVER DATA LINES DETECTION AND CLASSIFICATION SCHEME - A PoDL system includes a PSE connected via a wire pair to a PD, where differential data and DC power are transmitted over the same wire pair. Typically, low voltage/current detection and classification routines are required upon every powering up of the system to allow the PD to convey its PoDL requirements to the PSE. Various techniques are described that simplify or obviate such start-up routines or enable increased flexibility for the PoDL system. Such techniques include: ways to specify a particular PD operating voltage; ways to disable the PD's UVLO circuit during such routines; using opposite polarity voltages for the two routines; using voltage limiters or surge protectors to convey the PoDL information; detecting loop resistance; using a PSE memory to store previous results of the routines; and powering the PD communication circuit using the wire pair while the PD load is powered by an alternate power source.05-28-2015
20150215131DETECTION SCHEME FOR FOUR WIRE PAIR POWER OVER ETHERNET SYSTEM - In a method performed by a PoE system, a PSE is able to detect whether a PD is compatible for receiving power via four wire pairs in the standard Ethernet cable. The PSE provides a current limited voltage to a first and second pair of wires in the cable, during a detection phase, to detect a characteristic impedance of the PD. In the PSE, a first resistor is connected to a third wire pair and a second resistor is connected to a fourth wire pair. During the detection phase, the PSE detects the relative currents through the resistors. If the currents are the same, then the PSE knows the PD is able to receive power via the four wire pairs. The PSE then applies the full PoE voltage to the first and second wire pairs and connects the third and fourth wire pairs to a low voltage via a MOSFET.07-30-2015
20150326403PSE CONTROLLER IN PoE SYSTEM DETECTS DIFFERENT PDs ON DATA PAIRS AND SPARE PAIRS - A PSE includes a PSE controller that performs a handshaking routine with any PDs connected to the data wire pairs and spare wire pairs and applies power to the data wire pairs and spare wire pairs, via a switch, if certain conditions are met. Two different levels of currents are supplied to different terminals of the PSE controller that are connected to the data wire pairs and the spare wire pairs, and the resulting voltages are measured. The voltages are used to determine the PD impedances at the ends of the data wire pairs and spare wire pairs to determine whether a PD is connected to the data wire pair, whether another PD is connected to the spare wire pair, or whether a single PD is connected to both the data wire pairs and the spare wire pairs.11-12-2015

20150333935PoDL SYSTEM WITH ACTIVE dV/dt and dI/dt CONTROL - A Power Over Data Lines (PoDL) system includes Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) supplying DC power and differential Ethernet data over a single twisted wire pair to a Powered Device (PD). Due to start-up perturbations, PD load current variations, and other causes, dV/dt noise is introduced in the power signal. Such noise may be misinterpreted as data unless mitigated somehow. Rather than increasing the values of the passive filtering components conventionally used for decoupling/coupling the power and data from/to the wire pair, active circuitry is provided in the PSE, PD, or both to limit dV/dt in the power signal. Such circuitry may be implemented on the same chip as the PSE controller or PD controller. Therefore, the sizes of the passive components in the decoupling/coupling networks may be reduced.11-19-2015
20160142217DETECTING GROUND ISOLATION FAULT IN ETHERNET PoDL SYSTEM - Circuits and techniques are described for detecting a ground fault leak between the PSE and the PD. Prior to PoDL voltage being applied to the PD, a test switch is temporarily closed for sensing a voltage drop in a loop between the positive terminal of the PSE voltage source and any ground leakage path between the PSE and the PD. If the resistance of the ground leakage path is below a certain threshold, a fault is declared. A similar test may be performed without a test switch by supplying a known test current through the loop and sensing the voltage drop. Another test is to connect the positive terminal of the PSE voltage source to the loop and sense the resulting current. After the full PoDL voltage is applied to the PD, a ground fault may be detected by sensing the equivalence between the source and return PSE currents.05-19-2016

20100141282MEASURING CABLE RESISTANCE IN SYSTEM FOR PROVIDING POWER OVER COMMUNICATION CABLE - A system for providing power to a powered device over a communication cable has a cable resistance measuring mechanism that determines values of response signals detected in response to supplying each of at least three reference signals over the communication cable, and determines the resistance of a pair of wires in the cable based on these values. The cable resistance measuring mechanism may be configured for determining resistance of an Ethernet cable that delivers power to the powered device in a Power over Ethernet system.06-10-2010
20110125341PROVIDING POWER TO POWERED DEVICE HAVING MULTIPLE POWER SUPPLY INPUTS - A system for providing power to a load, having first and second power supply inputs respectively responsive to first and second input signals from first and second power supply sources to supply power to the load. For example, the first power supply input may be configured for supplying the load with power received from a communication link, such as an Ethernet link, and the second power supply input may be configured for supplying the load with power from an auxiliary power source. A power converter is provided to produce an output signal for supplying power to the load in response to the second input signal. The power converter is controlled to produce the output signal in accordance with a value of the first input signal.05-26-2011
20120303981Providing power to powered device having multiple power supply inputs - A system for providing power to a load, having first and second power supply inputs respectively responsive to first and second input signals from first and second power supply sources to supply power to the load. For example, the first power supply input may be configured for supplying the load with power received from a communication link, such as an Ethernet link, and the second power supply input may be configured for supplying the load with power from an auxiliary power source. A power converter is provided to produce an output signal for supplying power to the load in response to the second input signal. The power converter is controlled to produce the output signal in accordance with a value of the first input signal.11-29-2012
20130049469POWER COMBINING IN POWER OVER ETHERNET SYSTEMS - A technique for combining power to a single load from multiple power supplies using power over Ethernet (PoE) is disclosed. Each power supply is coupled to associated power sourcing equipment (PSE) providing PoE, and each PSE has a current limit. The power supplies supply approximately the same voltage, but the output voltages are typically not exactly equal. All the power supplies are connected via diodes to a common load terminal. The power supply outputting the highest voltage first supplies power to the load terminal, since only its diode is forward biased, until a PoE current limit is reached. Then its duty cycle is limited. The load terminal voltage is then inherently lowered to cause the diode of the power supply with the next highest output voltage to connect it to the load to supply additional power to the load as the first power supply continues to supply its limited current.02-28-2013
20130113275SWITCHING OF CONDUCTOR PAIR IN POWER OVER ETHERNET SYSTEM - Technique for providing power to a powered device (PD) over a cable having first and second sets of twisted pairs, such as signal pairs and spare pairs. Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) circuitry is coupled via a first switch to the second set, e.g. to the spare pairs. A switch control circuit turns the first switch off to enable the PSE circuitry to perform a prescribed operation in connection with the PD over only the first set, e.g. over the signal pairs, and turns the first switch on to enable the PSE circuitry to perform the prescribed operation in connection with the PD over the first and second sets.05-09-2013
20130124112Anemometer Detecting Thermal Time Constant of Sensor - An anemometer and method for analyzing fluid flow is described. In one embodiment, a transistor sensor is heated by applying power to cause its base-emitter junction to rise from an ambient first temperature to a second temperature. The power is removed, and the Vbe is measured at intervals as the junction cools. The Vbe equates to a temperature of the junction. The temperature exponentially decreases, and the time constant of the decay corresponds to the fluid flow velocity. A best fit curve analysis is performed on the temperature decay curve, and the time constant of the exponential decay is derived by a data processor. A transfer function correlates the time constant to the fluid flow velocity. The transistor is thermally coupled to a metal rod heat sink extending from the package, and the characteristics of the rod are controlled to adjust the performance of the anemometer.05-16-2013
20130215657ACTIVE BRIDGE RECTIFICATION - Technique for controlling a circuit that converts an AC input voltage into a DC output voltage using transistors arranged in first and second transistor pairs. Each transistor of the first pair is controlled in accordance with polarity of the AC input voltage. Each transistor of the second pair is controlled based on a difference between the AC input voltage and the DC output voltage.08-22-2013
20140372773POWER OVER ETHERNET ON DATA PAIRS AND SPARE PAIRS - Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) provides a PoE supply voltage over data wires to a Powered Device (PD). A PSE controller controls a first FET that couples the PoE voltage to the data wire pairs and controls a second FET that couples the data wire pairs to the spare wire pairs. Upon powering up, the PSE controller keeps the two FETs open and performs a detection routine on any devices connected to the data pairs and spare pairs. If a PoE-compatible PD is detected as being coupled to the data pairs, the first switch is closed. If it is determined that the PoE voltage should also be coupled to the spare pairs, the second FET is also closed. The method prevents the PoE voltage from being applied to the spare pairs when the device connected to the spare pairs is not PoE compatible and maintains backwards compliance with IEEE PoE PDs.12-18-2014
20150019884PD IN POE SYSTEM HAVING REDUNDANT PSE CHANNEL INPUTS - A Powered Device (PD) in a PoE system has two input channels, each being coupled to a separate Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE) for increased reliability. A first PD controller is coupled to the first channel to perform hand-shaking and closes a first Power Good (PWRGD) switch when the PoE voltage is detected on the first channel. A second PD controller is coupled to the second channel to perform hand-shaking and closes a second PWRGD switch when the PoE voltage is detected on the second channel. A diode bridge couples both channels to a single regulating power supply that supplies power to a load. Auxiliary switches are controlled by the PWRGD signals so that only the first channel or the second channel is coupled to the diode bridge in the event that both channels receive the respective PoE voltages. Therefore, hot standby is provided using only one power supply.01-15-2015
20160033545ANEMOMETER DETECTING THERMAL TIME CONSTANT OF SENSOR - An anemometer and method for analyzing fluid flow is described. The transistor is thermally coupled to a metal rod heat sink extending from the package, and the characteristics of the rod are controlled to adjust the performance of the anemometer.02-04-2016
