20090294084 | Local Tension Generating Air Stabilization System for Web Products - An air stabilization system employing two parallel, opposite-facing Coanda nozzles, with each nozzle exhausting gas at opposite directions, subjects a moving flexible web to opposing forces effective to create local tension within the web. Each nozzle includes an elongated slot that is perpendicular to the path of the moving web. The nozzles serve as separate points along the machine direction for controlling the height of the web. The operative surface with the nozzles can exhibit a flush surface. The nozzles can be formed on elevated structures on the operative surface. The operative surface can be covered with a transparent substrate to minimize shape distortions on the moving web and to prevent debris from collecting around the sensor. By modulating the velocities of gases exiting the nozzles, the shape of the web can be manipulated to present a planar contour. The air stabilization system can be incorporated into a caliper scanner. | 12-03-2009 |

20140150607 | PROCESS FOR DIRECT REDUCTION OF IRON OXIDE - A process for direct reduction of iron oxide in a shaft furnace. The furnace has a pre-reduction zone near its uppermost portion, a metallization zone below the pre-reduction zone, an intermediate zone which separates the pre-reduction zone from the metallization zone and which includes a restriction to inhibit rich fuel gas from passing from the pre-reduction zone to the metallization zone, and a cooling zone below the metallization zone at the lowest portion of the furnace. The process includes feeding iron oxide to the furnace, passing the iron oxide successively downwardly through the pre-reduction zone, the transition zone, the metallization zone, and the cooling zone while passing rich fuel gas produced by external partial combustion with a sub-stoichiometric volume of air upwardly through the pre-reduction zone in counter-current flow so as to partially reduce the iron oxide, and passing reducing gas downwardly through the metallization zone in co-current flow so as to substantially complete the reduction of the iron oxide to metallic iron. The reducing gas is first pre-heated in a gas heater and then subjected to partial combustion with oxygen to further increase its temperature. The process includes removing a metallized iron product from the cooling zone. | 06-05-2014 |

20120292496 | FLOW THROUGH METALLIC NANOHOLE ARRAYS - The present invention presents a device and methods of use thereof in combined electrohydrodynamic concentration and plasmonic detection of a charged species of interest using a flow-through nanohole array. The device comprises microchannels, which are linked to a substrate with arrays of through nanoholes, wherein the substrate comprises two layers, wherein one of the layers is made of insulator material and one of the layers is made of metal, whereby induction of an electric field across the nanohole array results in the species of interest concentrating inside the nanoholes and in the vicinity of the nanohole arrays. The induction of an electric field is achieved by means of an external electric field source, which is applied to the fluid containing the species of interest, resulting in electroosmotic (EO) flow. An additional pressure driven fluid flow in the microchannels, co-directional to the EO flow is applied by external means. The resulting fluid flow from the combination of the EO and pressure driven flow results in a total bulk fluid flow hereafter referred to as bulk flow (BF). The local electric field strength across the insulator layer of the nanoholes is high and the charged species in the fluid may exhibit a high electrophoretic (EP) velocity, opposing the BF. The local field strength in the metallic portion of the nanoholes is null, due to the conducting nature of the metal, and the charged species in the fluid exhibits a null EP velocity in this region. The BF and the EP velocity of the charged species may be balanced which may result in the concentration of the charged species inside the nanoholes and at both sides of the nanohole array. An incident light over one side of the nanohole array may result in the formation of surface plasmons (SP) at the interface of the metal and the surrounding liquid containing the concentrated species. The signal from the SP may be detected by optical means, including surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging and SPR spectroscopy. | 11-22-2012 |
20140045277 | SYSTEM FOR TRAPPING, INTERACTING AND MODIFYING SINGLE PROTEIN MOLECULES USING A DOUBLE-NANOHOLE STRUCTURE - Molecules or particle having a hydrodynamic radius as small as 3.5 nm can be trapped using a double-nanohole structure defined in a metal film or other metallic layer. Application of a suitable optical radiation flux to the double-nanohole structure can provide a folding and/or binding of protein molecules that can be identified based on changes in optical transmission. Varying nanohole transmissions can thus be associated with trapping, binding and unfolding of biological particles. The double-nanohole defines cusps, but such cusps can be defined in other ways as well. | 02-13-2014 |
